Sanchar Saathi: Your Essential Tool for Mobile Security
How many mobile connections are active under your name, and could any of them potentially be compromised by fraud? If clarity is needed, the Sanchar Saathi app from the Department of Telecommunications (DoT) simplifies this process. With just a few steps, you can inspect every SIM card issued against your identity and promptly block any that raise concern.
The escalating number of identity theft cases and fraudulent mobile connections highlights the significance of this service. Created by the DoT, Sanchar Saathi offers an efficient means for citizens to keep tabs on and manage the mobile connections associated with their documents.
Initially launched as a web portal in 2023 to assist users in reporting stolen phones, the service expanded into a dedicated mobile application for Android and iOS, officially released on 17 January 2025.
Sanchar Saathi empowers users with control over their mobile connections. Its standout feature provides a complete overview of every active mobile connection linked to their identity documents. For individuals whose documents, such as Aadhaar, have possibly been misappropriated, this comprehensive list serves as a crucial tool for defence. Spotting a number that is not familiar is a clear indicator of potential misuse.
The procedure is user-friendly. Individuals enter any active mobile number and undergo OTP verification. The application then showcases all SIM cards associated with the same identity. If any unauthorised connection is identified, users can immediately classify it as “Not My Number”. The DoT and telecom providers will then swiftly act to block the connection and prevent further misuse.
Additional Important Features of Sanchar Saathi
Block Lost or Stolen Mobiles (CEIR)
Users can block a lost or stolen device using its IMEI number, ensuring it cannot be accessed on any network.
Report Suspected Fraud (Chakshu)
This feature enables users to report dubious calls or messages that might be associated with financial fraud or impersonation attempts.
Controversy Over Mandatory Installation
Recently, the app garnered attention not only for its security features but also due to an order from the DoT. This order aimed to mandate the pre-installation of the Sanchar Saathi app on all new smartphones sold in India. The decision stirred concerns regarding privacy and possible surveillance, leading to significant pushback from manufacturers and civil society organisations.
Following a wave of public opposition, the government retracted the mandate in December 2025, affirming that the app will remain optional for users.
Despite the surrounding controversy, Sanchar Saathi has experienced robust adoption. The government reports over two crore downloads, with the app aiding citizens in reporting numerous cyber fraud incidents daily.
