Smartphone Durability Trends in India
Smartphone durability has become a crucial aspect affecting purchase decisions in India, as revealed by the “India Smartphone Durability Consumer Study 2025” carried out by Counterpoint Research in collaboration with Oppo India.
Survey Insights
The comprehensive survey, which included over 4,500 respondents from 26 major cities, indicated that concerns surrounding durability significantly impact consumer preferences and feelings. Approximately 78% of users stated they refrain from using their smartphones in rainy or overly hot conditions out of fear of potential damage. Furthermore, 35% expressed a constant worry about harming their devices, while 56% reported feeling distressed, and 39% felt anxious or panicked if their phone fell or sustained a crack.
The Financial Impact of Durability Concerns
The research also shed light on the monetary responsibility of repairs. Roughly 42% of participants earmarked between ₹2,001 and ₹5,000 for smartphone repairs, 21% spent between ₹5,001 and ₹10,000, and 8% incurred expenses exceeding ₹10,001. As smartphones continue to serve as essential tools in both work and personal realms, these repair costs contribute to the overall financial burden on households.
The Risk of Data Loss
Concerns about durability extend beyond mere hardware damage. More than 72% of those surveyed voiced fears of losing personal data such as images and videos in the event of device damage or theft. Approximately 40% indicated they would consider paying over ₹5,000 to recover lost data.
Consumer Perspectives on Durability
Tarun Pathak, Research Director at Counterpoint, emphasized the importance of durability in consumer choices. The study revealed that 79% of respondents regard durability as vital when purchasing a smartphone, while 76% acknowledged they feel more secure with devices designed for longevity. Notably, 86% of Oppo users rated the brand favourably regarding durability, indicating Oppo’s alignment with consumer demands and consistent delivery in this area.
Oppo’s Commitment to Durability
In response to these findings, Oppo showcased its rigorous durability testing protocols at its Greater Noida facility. Each smartphone model undergoes over 150 quality assessments prior to launch, including 14,000 drop tests from a height of 2.5 metres, which exceeds the industry norm by threefold, as well as 30 minutes of water exposure at a depth of 1.5 metres to comply with IP68 waterproof standards.
Environmental Testing Standards
Peter Dohyung Lee, Head of Product Strategy at Oppo, stated that durability is not merely an attribute but a fundamental requirement. The aim is to empower users to enjoy their smartphones without the incessant worry of damage, reiterating that durability is now pivotal in the decision-making process.
Additionally, Oppo conducts tests under various extreme environmental conditions, simulating temperatures from -40°C to 75°C and high humidity levels to mirror India’s diverse climate. The company also adheres to SGS testing, TÜV Rheinland certification, and military-grade durability standards.
Conclusion on Durability and Emotional Well-being
The research findings highlight how the durability of smartphones is intertwined with mental well-being for Indian consumers, thus influencing both emotional stability and financial planning.
