Kindle Paperwhite 12th Generation has been introduced in India by Amazon, marking the return of this popular e-reader after a gap of more than 3.5 years. With a price tag of ₹16,999, this new Kindle offers significant upgrades compared to its predecessor. The device has been in use for nearly a week to assess its value.

Noteworthy Display Features of the Kindle Paperwhite 12th Generation

Beginning with its design, the Kindle Paperwhite features a 7-inch display, an upgrade from the previous 6.8-inch display. This new model boasts a resolution of 300ppi and an enhanced contrast ratio. A standout improvement is the speed, with page turning now being 25% faster than before.

Performance Comparison with Previous Models

Comparison with an older 10th-generation model reveals noticeable differences in performance. Using the page slider in “Ikigai”, the improved smoothness was evident. Unlike the older model, which often exhibited stuttering, the new Kindle Paperwhite operates flawlessly.

Lighting and Design Enhancements

The display comprises 12 White LEDs and 13 Amber LEDs, featuring adjustable warm light and a dark mode, enhancing the reading experience in dim environments.

Design-wise, it adheres to a familiar style with thick bezels framing the display, complemented by a prominent Kindle logo at the bottom. The device is offered only in a black plastic finish, but numerous cover options in Black, Marine Green, and Tulip Pink can be purchased for ₹1,999.

Portability and Build Quality

Weighing about 211g, the Kindle Paperwhite is lightweight and portable, effortlessly fitting into backpacks or pockets due to its slim profile of 7.8mm. It maintains an IPX8 rating, making it suitable for readers who enjoy reading in the rain, though caution is still advised. Additionally, the new Kindle comes equipped with 16GB of storage, which is double that of the earlier model.

Battery Life and Usability

Amazon states that the battery life can last up to 3 months, a claim that, although untested personally, is likely credible. An older 10th-gen Kindle continues to serve well during travels, with the owner only needing to charge it once, download new books, and activate flight mode, thereby extending battery life for months.

This is mainly due to the fact that e-ink displays only consume power when turning pages, allowing readers to enjoy long periods without charging.

Is the Kindle Paperwhite 12th Generation Worth the Investment?

With a price of ₹16,999, the Kindle Paperwhite might be seen as a significant investment, especially when considering the additional costs of acquiring books. However, for long-time Kindle users, transitioning to this new device seems worthwhile.

For reference, the previous Kindle Paperwhite (11th Gen) was launched at ₹13,999 with only 8GB storage. The enhancements in storage, size, speed, and overall quality justify the price increase for the newer model.

For enthusiasts of reading who appreciate the convenience of digital formats over traditional paperbacks, now is the time to consider purchasing a Kindle.
