Elon Musk Bans Hashtags in X Advertisements

Elon Musk has declared that hashtags will be prohibited in advertisements on X, referring to them as an aesthetic nightmare in a post made on Thursday. This decision is part of Musk’s ongoing effort to differentiate the platform from traditional social media practices.

“Starting tomorrow, the esthetic nightmare that is hashtags will be banned from ads on 𝕏,” he stated, reinforcing his belief that hashtags disrupt visual clarity and are no longer necessary.

In a previous instance, Musk had also targeted hashtags. Back in December 2024, he urged users to abandon them entirely, asserting that they were outdated and visually unappealing. He remarked that “the system doesn’t need them anymore and they look ugly,” advocating for a shift to the platform’s developing AI tools as a replacement for traditional tagging.

Musk maintains that X’s discovery and search algorithms, now enhanced by Grok, the AI chatbot from his company xAI, can effectively categorize and highlight content without the need for hashtags. He believes this transition will lead to a more streamlined advertising approach and improved user experiences.

Hashtags have long been integral to social media, initially popularised by Twitter in 2007 as a means to organise conversations and trends. However, under Musk’s guidance, X continues to distance itself from the conventions that previously characterised the platform.
