Specialised Skills for India’s Electric Vehicle Charging Infrastructure

Mercedes-Benz Research and Development India (MBRDI), in partnership with The Energy and Resources Institute (TERI), has released an innovative whitepaper highlighting the urgent requirement for specialised skills to enhance India’s electric vehicle (EV) charging infrastructure.

The report, launched on September 3, underlines that creating a strong EV charging ecosystem involves not just expanding physical facilities but also ensuring the workforce possesses the necessary technical skills.

The Importance of Sustainability and Skills Development

Manu Saale, Managing Director and CEO of MBRDI, remarked that sustainability transcends technology; it fundamentally concerns people. Through the Future-In-Charge initiative, they aim to not only eliminate the skills gap but also address systemic barriers that hinder comprehensive improvement in the EV skilling and infrastructure landscape. Partnering with TERI to equip emerging professionals with cutting-edge skills in areas such as smart grid integration and IoT is viewed as a crucial investment in India’s future, one that could serve as an inspiration for similar projects globally.

Identifying Critical Skill Categories

The whitepaper pinpoints essential skill areas such as electrical engineering, power electronics, cybersecurity, integration of renewable energy, and consumer safety protocols. Furthermore, it highlights the necessity of collaboration among various stakeholders, including government entities, educational institutions, and private sectors.

Collaboration for Energy Transition

Dr. Vibha Dhawan, Director General of TERI, emphasised the importance of such partnerships in expediting India’s shift to cleaner energy. The shift towards clean mobility necessitates a skilled workforce in EV charging infrastructure. The Future-In-Charge initiative, a collaboration between TERI and MBRDI, is a forward-thinking approach to align industry demands with emerging youth talent. By offering NCVET-approved training that meets the latest technological benchmarks, the goal is to empower the next generation to spearhead India’s green jobs within the clean mobility sector with both expertise and confidence.

Training and National Skill Framework Recommendations

The document advocates for the establishment of training programmes, certification standards, and curricula specific to EV charging technologies. It also advises the creation of a national skilling framework that corresponds with India’s ambitious clean mobility objectives.

As the adoption of electric vehicles accelerates, the report observes that India will require thousands of proficient individuals to guarantee dependable charging infrastructure, while also supporting the nation’s decarbonisation ambitions.
