iPhone 17 Air: Apple’s Port-less Future Possibility

iPhone 17 Air: Apple’s Port-less Future Possibility

Earlier this week, reports emerged that Apple was contemplating a completely port-less version of the iPhone 17 Air by omitting the USB-C charging port located at the bottom. The iPhone 17 Air is on track to become the thinnest iPhone ever produced by Apple, making it an ideal candidate for a fully wireless design.

Nevertheless, Apple appears to have decided against this idea, primarily due to concerns about charging speeds and the potential backlash from the European Union. The EU mandated that Apple replace the Lightning port with a USB-C port on all iPhones sold within its borders. The relationship between Apple and the EU has been strained, and it seems the company preferred to avoid any further disputes.

However, a new report from 9to5Mac indicates that the EU has now provided Apple with the approval for a port-less iPhone. If Apple chooses to pursue this design in the future, the EU will not raise any regulatory issues. The report includes a statement from European Commission spokesperson Federica Miccoli, who confirmed that a port-less iPhone would comply with regulations, stating that since such radio equipment cannot be charged via traditional wired methods, there is no need to include a standard wired charging solution.

While this year’s iPhone 17 Air will almost certainly feature a USB-C port, the prospect of a port-less iPhone in the future remains encouraging.
