In a future where artificial intelligence and robotics can fulfil virtually every material requirement, Tesla CEO Elon Musk suggests that humanity should progress beyond Universal Basic Income (UBI) and adopt Universal High Income (UHI).
During a conversation with investor and entrepreneur Nikhil Kamath on the People of WTF podcast, Musk described a future scenario in which human survival is no longer the economic standard, thanks to the remarkable abundance created by autonomous technologies. He mentioned that in a world where AI and robotics satisfy all needs, individuals will have anything they desire.
This idea signifies a shift in Musk’s perspective. He has previously supported UBI – a framework where every citizen receives a steady income irrespective of their job status – to alleviate the job displacement that automation could cause. However, as technology progresses rapidly, Musk now contends that merely addressing basic needs is insufficiently ambitious.
He explained that they are envisioning a post-scarcity environment, where the challenge is not about increasing productivity but about distribution. In such a society, individuals do not simply survive – they prosper, gaining access to products, services, and experiences that were once deemed luxurious.
According to Musk, the shift from UBI to UHI depends on substantial advancements in productivity. Robots and AI would manage everything from manufacturing and logistics to software development and caregiving. With supply limitations removed, prices would decrease, making a comfortable existence universally attainable. Musk stated that one can envision something, and then possess it.
Implications for India
For developing nations like India, Musk’s vision might appear exceedingly futuristic – if not entirely utopian. Nonetheless, it remains profoundly pertinent. India faces the challenge of a rapidly expanding population alongside limited economic prospects. While the digital economy is creating new opportunities, countless individuals remain trapped in low-paying, unskilled jobs. UHI shifts the focus of the dialogue from employment towards dignity, access, and aspiration.
Additionally, Musk’s UHI concept embodies a philosophical shift. It is not about supplanting the work ethic; it aims to redefine human purpose. If individuals no longer need to labour for survival, what pursuits will they choose? How do people allocate their time in a world where their essential needs are automated?
In the podcast, Musk did not provide all the answers but communicated one clear message: the future will be peculiar. Strange, perhaps – but also potentially freeing.
