Garmin Forerunner 970 Review: The Ultimate Tool for Runners

Garmin Forerunner 970 is a sophisticated running companion designed not just for dedicated athletes but also for those who enjoy occasional jogging. This device brings a new dimension to running by providing comprehensive data and insights, making it intriguing even for casual runners.

First Impressions on the Garmin Forerunner 970

The initial experience with the Forerunner 970 during a 5K run was astonishing. Unlike typical wearables that merely track pace, time, and distance, this watch measures an extensive array of metrics including running power, cadence, stride length, ground contact time, vertical oscillation, and step speed loss. When combined with Garmin’s HRM strap, additional advanced data such as running economy and tolerance become available.

Initially, the multitude of metrics felt overwhelming. However, patterns became apparent quite quickly. While the stride was efficient, cadence dropped midway through the run, and a high ground contact time indicated excess time on the ground. This shifted the perception of running from a simple exercise into an activity rich with measurable aspects and opportunities for enhancement.

Wearing the Garmin Forerunner 970 All Day

Despite its advanced features, the Forerunner 970 is surprisingly lightweight. The sapphire glass, titanium bezel, and large AMOLED display contribute to its quality without causing discomfort during wear. It was worn consistently throughout the day, even during sleep, requiring removal only for showers, which is unnecessary given its water resistance.

The strap offered mixed feelings initially, causing slight irritation. However, as time passed, comfort was attained, and by the second week, it felt perfectly natural.

Exceptional Sleep Tracking Features

An unexpected highlight was the sleep tracking functionality. When compared to an Apple Watch, the Garmin data proved to be more accurate and consistent. Nightly sleep analysis included light, deep, REM, and awake phases, even picking up on disruptions that went unnoticed. Unlike the Apple Watch, which occasionally provided inconclusive data, the Forerunner 970 offered reliable insights.

Outstanding Battery Life

Garmin outshines many smartwatches with its remarkable battery life. After charging to 100% upon unboxing and turning off the always-on display, it has remained charged for two weeks without needing another charge. This enduring power remains even with GPS workouts and constant health monitoring. In contrast, an Apple Watch typically requires nightly charging. The convenience of extended battery life quickly becomes a desired luxury.

Impressive Display and Health Metrics

The AMOLED display is vibrant, clear, and easily readable in bright sunlight, making navigation through health metrics an enjoyable experience. Garmin delivers a wide range of health data, including heart rate, SpO₂ levels, stress indicators, body battery (energy reserve), VO₂ max, and respiration rate, presenting it all in a reliable manner. The large display ensures clarity for all metrics.

The Runner’s Watch Experience

At its core, the Garmin Forerunner 970 is a premium running watch, excelling in this domain. The multi-band GPS is impressively precise, outperforming the Apple Watch in areas where it typically falters, such as urban runs around tall buildings. Features like full-colour maps and turn-by-turn navigation, initially considered unnecessary, turned out to be quite beneficial.

Additionally, the built-in LED torch may seem superfluous but proves useful for evening walks or navigating in the dark.

Versatility Beyond Running

The Forerunner 970 is not exclusive to running enthusiasts. With profiles for cycling, swimming, hiking, gym workouts, yoga, HIIT, and even triathlon modes allowing for sport switching mid-session, it caters to varied interests. Strength training sessions were tracked accurately with repetitions and sets logged efficiently.

Swimmers benefit from water resistance and stroke tracking, while cyclists can harness detailed power and cadence support when connected to external sensors, proving this watch is a comprehensive training tool.

Smartwatch Capabilities

Despite Garmin’s fitness-centric focus, essential smartwatch features aren’t overlooked:

  • Notifications are displayed clearly, and the AMOLED screen makes alerts easily readable.
  • Music storage and Spotify compatibility allow for phone-free runs with Bluetooth earbuds.
  • With a built-in microphone and speaker, calls can be managed directly through the watch, though this feature comes across as basic rather than luxurious.

While it does not compete with Apple or Samsung in terms of app availability or smart features, as a training-focused device with adequate smart functionality, it holds its ground effectively.

Considerations and Limitations

No device is flawless, and the Forerunner 970 has several quirks to consider.

Firstly, while the AMOLED screen is appealing, keeping it always on significantly reduces battery life. With this feature active, users can expect 4–5 days of use, which is impressive but not on par with the two-week performance achieved with it off.

Secondly, Garmin’s software can occasionally appear cumbersome. Menu density and interface intuition vary, with rare instances of unintentional touches. Although not detrimental, it serves as a reminder that this watch is predominantly designed for athletes rather than a sleek everyday smartwatch.

Lastly, the price point of ₹90,990 in India positions this as a luxury item rather than a budget-friendly choice.

Who Should Consider the Garmin Forerunner 970?

The Garmin Forerunner 970 is an exceptional gadget, lightweight, feature-rich, and capable of providing profound insights into training and body awareness, making it an athlete’s dream.

However, it caters to a specific audience. For marathon runners, triathletes, or anyone engaged in structured training, this watch is an unparalleled asset for optimising performance and recovery.

Conversely, for casual runners merely seeking to maintain fitness, its advanced features may be excessive. A more affordable Garmin model or a simpler fitness-focused smartwatch might suffice for logging occasional 5Ks.

Over two weeks with the Forerunner 970 offered a glimpse into the analytical world of running, an area lacking in simple sweat-based exercise insights. While not ready to delve into that realm permanently, the understanding of why serious athletes favour Garmin is now clear.
