AI Phone is set to revolutionise the tech market as German telecommunications giant Deutsche Telekom (DT) collaborates with Perplexity, Picsart, and others to unveil this groundbreaking device. Anticipated to debut in the latter half of this year, the AI Phone will hit the shelves in 2026, priced below $1,000 and primarily aimed at consumers in Europe.

Features of the AI Phone

The AI Phone will incorporate Perplexity as its default assistant, ensuring a seamless integration of AI-powered search and assistance for users. This initiative is designed to enhance the accessibility of information. Claudia Nemat, a board member at DT, highlighted the company’s transformation into a leader in AI technology, stating DT is evolving in the AI space but clarified the focus on developing AI agents rather than foundational large language models.

Partnership with Perplexity

Valued at nearly $9 billion, Perplexity plays a critical role in the creation of the AI Phone. Originally recognised for its advanced generative AI search engine, the startup is now innovating products that are “proactive”. Aravind Srinivas, co-founder of Perplexity, stated that the assistant is evolving from merely providing answers to taking action on behalf of users, performing tasks like booking flights, sending emails, and managing reminders.

The Perplexity Assistant will be integrated into the native Android OS of the AI Phone, offering a personalised experience for each user. Srinivas clarified that Perplexity is not producing a new hardware device but focusing on embedding the assistant into the AI Phone. This integration will empower the assistant to respond to inquiries and execute user-specific tasks.

The Significance of This Partnership

This initiative signifies Perplexity’s first substantial collaboration with a telecommunications provider to engineer an AI interface tailored for smartphones. Previously, Perplexity had released an Android assistant that may serve as a groundwork for this forthcoming AI Phone. However, details surrounding the phone’s hardware specifications are still under wraps.

Claudia Nemat refrained from sharing detailed information regarding the device’s hardware or its operating system. Yet, the emphasis on AI agents instead of advanced language models indicates a unique strategic direction for the company, aligning with the larger industry trend of incorporating AI into everyday technology.
