Google’s Identity Check: Enhanced Security for Android Devices

Google is expanding its Identity Check feature, aimed at preventing unauthorised access to critical settings and Google accounts in the event of smartphone theft, to a larger selection of Android devices, including the OnePlus 13.

This feature was recently identified in the Android 16 beta version for the OnePlus 13, according to reports from Android Authority. Initially launched on Google Pixel devices through the Android 15 QPR1 update in December 2024, Identity Check has also been introduced to Samsung smartphones with the One UI 7 interface.

Much like Apple’s Stolen Device Protection, which debuted with iOS 17.3 in January 2024, Google’s Identity Check enhances the security of devices by mandating biometric authentication, such as fingerprint or facial recognition, prior to making any alterations to crucial system settings. These settings encompass accessing saved passwords, altering device PINs, or deactivating the Find My Device feature, particularly when a device is found in an unfamiliar location.

Once Android 16 is officially launched later this year, smartphones that either update to this OS or come with it pre-installed are anticipated to acquire the Identity Check feature, as long as they include Class 3 biometric authentication hardware.

To activate this feature, users should navigate to: Settings > Google > Theft Protection > Use Identity Check.

Upon activation, Identity Check provides an additional layer of security for Google accounts on the device, guaranteeing that even if a thief memorises the passcode, they cannot seize control without conducting biometric verification. Furthermore, disabling the feature necessitates either biometric authentication or access via a connected Google account.

While Apple users have enjoyed similar security measures since early 2024, the broad rollout of Identity Check signifies a considerable advancement for Android’s built-in tools for preventing theft, thereby enhancing robust security for a wider array of smartphone users.
