Google News Audio Briefing is introducing an innovative feature to its app, allowing users to listen to news headlines in audio format. This addition is designed for mobile users who favour listening to updates rather than reading them. It is particularly useful during commutes, while driving, or while handling household tasks. The announcement of this feature took place during a pilot programme last week, and it has now begun to roll out for Android devices.

Exploring the Google News Audio Briefing Functionality

Inside the Google News app, a new tab labelled “Listen” appears, complete with an over-the-ear headphones symbol and an AI sparkle. Tapping this tab causes a bottom sheet to slide up from the base of the screen, avoiding the need to redirect to a different page.

Interface Features of the Audio Briefing

The bottom sheet provides an audio player interface designed with a Material 3 Expressive-like aesthetic. Here, listeners can control playback with play/pause options and adjust the playback speed. Additional features include skipping and rewinding segments, with options for a 15-second rewind, a 30-second forward, and a “next subject” button to transition to different news topics. However, users should keep in mind that Google acknowledges, “The Audio Briefing is generated by AI. AI can make mistakes.”

Content and Duration of Audio Briefings

An audio briefing within the Google News app is anticipated to last between 10 to 15 minutes and comprises various news stories. The format employs a conversational style featuring two AI hosts discussing the news, enhancing the listening experience. Currently, the Google News Audio Briefing feature is available for Android users, with plans for a rollout on iOS devices expected shortly.
