Google Pixel 10a: A Comprehensive Review

Google Pixel 10a is now available in India, presenting a few minor enhancements compared to the previous version. At first sight, the device resembles its predecessor; the identical design, processor, camera, and main specifications show minimal change from last year’s Pixel 9a model. With only slight improvements, questions arise about the necessity of this annual update.

Priced competitively at Rs 49,999, the Pixel 10a is powered by a two-year-old Tensor G4 chip. In a market filled with high-performance mid-range smartphones, are these minor updates sufficient for success? After testing the smartphone for nearly two weeks, it is clear that although it retains the “Pixel-Magic” through impressive software, AI features, and camera capabilities, its performance did not meet expectations during heavy use.

This leads us to explore whether the Google Pixel 10a is a worthwhile upgrade and who might benefit from this smartphone.

Google Pixel 10a Design

The Pixel 10a follows the major design overhaul that was introduced with the Pixel 9a. Yet, it features subtle enhancements that contribute to a more premium look and feel. The pill-shaped camera has a more rounded appearance, and the noticeable bump is now absent. The matte finish on the back panel and aluminium frame provide the device with a sturdier feel.

The Pixel 10a also boasts improved durability with Gorilla Glass 7i protection and an IP68 rating for resistance against water and dust. Overall, while the design initially appears familiar, these slight changes enhance the Pixel 10a’s polish and align it more closely with Google’s flagship design.

Google Pixel 10a Display

The Google Pixel 10a features a 6.3-inch super Actua display, boasting a refresh rate of up to 120Hz, peak brightness reaching 3,000 nits, and FHD+ resolution. Despite the minimalist and stylish design, the display seems somewhat outdated due to the thick bezels that can be distracting.

Nonetheless, the viewing experience compensates for the bezels with sharp visuals, vibrant colours, and smooth scrolling that enhance daily use.

It also includes Widevine L1, HDR10, and HDR10+ support, enabling full HD streaming quality across major OTT platforms like Netflix and Amazon Prime Video.

Moreover, the addition of the upgraded Corning Gorilla Glass 7i offers extra peace of mind regarding durability. Thus, aside from the substantial bezel on the Pixel 10a, the device provides a sharp viewing experience and seamless navigation.

Google Pixel 10a Camera

The Google Pixel 10a is equipped with a dual-camera system comprising a 48MP main camera and a 13MP ultrawide camera. Despite retaining the same hardware, the camera continues Google’s tradition of exceptional image quality.

Daylight images taken with the Pixel 10a are detailed and exhibit natural colours, dynamic range, and well-balanced contrast that effectively manage highlights and shadows. Portrait shots also turn out impressive, featuring natural background blur and quick focus, despite the absence of a dedicated telephoto lens.

However, the Pixel 10a struggles in low-light conditions, delivering slightly washed-out images. Yet, in well-lit settings, it captures detailed images while accurately balancing colours.

At Rs 50,000, the camera performance of the Pixel 10a is satisfactory but may not compete favourably against rivals in the market that offer additional features and capabilities within the same price range.

Google Pixel 10a Performance and Software

The Google Pixel 10a runs on the same Tensor G4 processor as the previous year’s Pixel 9a, meaning there are no significant performance upgrades this year. Nonetheless, the everyday performance remains reliable and smooth.

During comparative testing with the Pixel 9a model, it was challenging to distinguish their performance in real-world scenarios. The device generally operates smoothly, apps open swiftly, and transitioning between them is seamless.

The gaming experience on the Pixel 10a is decent; titles like Battle Grounds Mobile India (BGMI) and Call of Duty Mobile ran smoothly at medium graphics settings. However, it became noticeably warm during extended gaming sessions, which could necessitate a break. Although there were no major stutters or frame drops, heavy mobile gamers might want to consider alternatives.

Overall, the daily usage remained consistent, making the Pixel 10a a reliable option for everyday activities such as browsing, messaging, social media use, and casual gaming.

On the software front, one of the standout features of Pixel devices is their user experience. The Pixel 10a operates on Android 16, packed with the latest AI innovations. The Material 3 Expressive UI is impressively clean and user-friendly at all touchpoints, with fluid navigation and animations along with various customisation options enhancing its appeal.

Additionally, the phone includes Gemini AI integration, providing advanced features like Gemini Live with contextual abilities, Pixel Screenshots, Magic Compose, Camera Coach, and other refined AI utilities. Moreover, Google aims to keep the smartphone future-ready by offering seven years of major software updates along with seven years of security support.

Google Pixel 10a Battery

The Google Pixel 10a is powered by a 5100mAh battery, which is similar to that of its predecessor. Given its compact size, the battery capacity is satisfactory, easily lasting a full day on a single charge, alleviating worries about battery drain even under heavy usage.

From a charging standpoint, the device supports upgraded 30W wired charging, taking slightly over an hour to fully charge from 1 to 100%. It also offers 10W wireless charging, although it lacks Qi2 charging technology.

Google Pixel 10a Verdict

Although the Google Pixel 10a introduces only minor upgrades, it features a refined design, a brighter display, dependable everyday performance, a seamless software experience, and enhanced Gemini AI integration. Furthermore, it possesses a battery capable of lasting the entire day.

Thus, for those upgrading from an older Pixel device or any other Android phone, the Pixel 10a could represent a sensible choice. However, for users who own a recent Android phone or the Pixel 9a, it may be advisable to wait.

Additionally, power users who engage in intense gaming or heavy multitasking might also want to explore other options.
