Gemini Update on Google Assistant Transition

Google has provided an update regarding the timeline for the transition from Assistant on Android devices to its Gemini AI model. This upgrade, which was initially planned for completion by the end of 2025, is now expected to take place in 2026, as noted in a post by Anish K, the Community Manager for the Gemini Apps team. Following this transition, Google Assistant will be phased out on Android phones, tablets, and its standalone iOS app, with the AI-driven Gemini model taking over.

What Does This Mean for Users?

Users may be wondering about the implications of this change and the reasoning behind the delay. In March 2025, Google revealed plans to replace Assistant with Gemini by the end of that year. However, the recent announcement indicates that this transition will not occur as promptly as originally anticipated. According to a post on the Gemini Help Desk, the rollout of the Gemini upgrade is now set for sometime in 2026.

Reasons Behind the Delay

The delay has been attributed to the need for a seamless transition. This approach is logical, given that moving to a generative AI model involves navigating various intricate technical challenges. Currently, the company has emphasised its focus on an OS-level upgrade, especially with the holiday season approaching, a period known for heightened smartphone usage. Thus, ensuring stability and a smooth user experience has become a priority over implementing significant backend changes.

What to Expect in 2026

The rollout of the Gemini transition is anticipated to commence in March 2026, with updates released gradually throughout the year. Users will still have the flexibility to toggle between Gemini and Assistant during this period. Notably, the Google Pixel 10 series will have Gemini set as the default assistant. Hence, users may need to exercise a bit of patience before fully utilising the capabilities of Gemini as their personal assistant.
