Google AI Data Centre Hub in Visakhapatnam

On April 28, Andhra Pradesh Chief Minister Chandrababu Naidu, accompanied by Union Minister Ashwini Vaishnaw, inaugurated the foundation for Google’s AI data centre hub in Visakhapatnam. This initiative represents Google’s largest $15 billion foreign direct investment (FDI) in India, which will be utilised over the next five years to construct the data centre.

Significance of the Investment

During the event, state IT minister Nara Lokesh expressed to Startup Superb that the moment is pivotal, stating that this is India’s most significant FDI investment since gaining independence. He noted that this achievement demonstrates Andhra Pradesh’s capability to execute ambitious projects. Lokesh emphasised the leadership’s role in this venture while speaking about Naidu.

Recognition from Union Minister

In his keynote address, Vaishnaw acknowledged Naidu’s previous efforts in establishing the IT corridor in Hyderabad while highlighting the potential transformation of Vizag into an AI data centre hub. He remarked that Visakhapatnam is set to be revitalised as AI-Patnam, drawing a parallel to Cyberabad.

Details of the AI Data Centre Project

The Google AI data centre initiative has commenced and will extend across 600 acres at three sites: Rambilli, Adavivaram, and Tarluvada. The facility is projected to start with a capacity of 1 gigawatt (GW) and aims for an expansion to 5 GW capacity.

Lokesh mentioned to Startup Superb the ambition to establish a thriving ecosystem proactively, expressing confidence in becoming a future IT powerhouse.

Enhancing Global Connectivity

The data centre will contribute to the creation of an international subsea cable landing station, significantly enhancing global internet connectivity and data transfer speeds. Vaishnaw stressed that the subsea cables would link India to Australia and the U.S. West Coast, as well as to the Middle East, Europe, the US, and the African coast.

Collaborative Efforts for the AI Hub

Alongside Google and the Government of Andhra Pradesh, AdaniConnex and Airtel will play crucial roles in developing the AI hub. Adani is expected to provide backing for data centre infrastructure and oversee renewable energy initiatives, while Airtel will manage the fibre-optic network and the international subsea cable landing station.
