Huawei Technologies is gearing up to evaluate its newest and most advanced artificial intelligence processor in an effort to compete with some of the high-performance products produced by US chipmaker Nvidia, as reported by The Wall Street Journal on Sunday.

Testing of Ascend 910D Chip

According to sources familiar with the developments, Huawei has reached out to multiple Chinese technology firms to assess the technical potential of its innovative chip, referred to as the Ascend 910D. The company aspires for this new version of its Ascend AI processors to surpass Nvidia’s H100 model. The initial samples of the Ascend 910D are anticipated to arrive by late May, according to the Wall Street Journal.

Mass Shipments of 910C AI Chip

In related news, Reuters reported on Monday that Huawei intends to commence mass shipments of its sophisticated 910C AI chip to Chinese customers as early as the next month.

Impact on Nvidia Stocks

Following these announcements, Nvidia’s shares fell by 1.4% in premarket trading. Nvidia chose not to comment on the situation, and Huawei has yet to respond to a Reuters inquiry for comments.

Challenges in Chip Development

Both Huawei and other Chinese tech companies have consistently encountered obstacles in developing high-quality chips that can compete with Nvidia’s offerings, which are extensively utilized for training AI models and providing essential data to algorithms to enhance learning and decision-making capabilities.

US Restrictions on Technology Access

In efforts to curb China’s technological advancements, especially in areas with potential military implications, the United States has limited the country’s access to Nvidia’s cutting-edge AI products, including the flagship B200 chip. U.S. authorities previously prohibited sales of Nvidia’s H100 chip in China back in 2022, even prior to the model’s official release.
