AI Adoption and Online Safety in India: Insights from Microsoft’s Survey

On Safer Internet Day, Microsoft unveiled the latest edition of its Global Online Safety Survey, focusing on AI adoption and online safety trends worldwide, particularly in India. The report highlights that 65% of individuals in India have engaged with generative AI, significantly surpassing the global average of 31%.

Survey Overview

The survey, conducted between July and August 2024, collected responses from a total of 14,800 participants across 15 countries, including teenagers, parents, and adults. The results show that the use of AI in India is primarily driven by services such as translation, answering inquiries, improving workplace productivity, and supporting students with their studies.

Demographics of AI Usage in India

AI usage has experienced substantial growth across various age demographics in India. Millennials, aged 25–44, are at the forefront, with 84% indicating they utilize AI, reflecting a 15% rise from the previous year. Furthermore, weekly engagement with generative AI in India has increased by 20%, now standing at 71%.

Concerns Related to AI

Despite the significant rise in AI adoption, there are numerous concerns surrounding its use. The survey identified key risks including online harassment (76%), deepfakes (74%), scams (73%), and AI hallucinations (70%). Moreover, more than 80% of participants raised concerns about AI being used by individuals younger than 18.

Parental Awareness of Online Safety

The survey reflects an improvement in parental awareness regarding online safety. Approximately 78% of Indian parents believe their teenagers have encountered online dangers, and 61% assert they are well-equipped to discuss these issues, a figure that exceeds the global average of 41%. Additionally, 82% of Indian teenagers reported facing online risks.

Teenagers’ Response to Online Risks

In light of these risks, Indian teenagers tend to seek guidance from trusted individuals. The report indicated that 85% of teens engage in conversations about online issues, 84% take preventive measures such as blocking or unfriending accounts, and 65% report content they find troubling.

Microsoft’s Strategy for Online Safety

To combat AI-related risks, Microsoft has developed a comprehensive six-pillar strategy that includes implementing strong safety measures, introducing digital watermarking for verifying media authenticity, and collaborating with governmental and industrial stakeholders. Additionally, the company has launched the Microsoft Family Safety Toolkit to assist families in discussing online safety concerns and utilizing digital parenting resources.

The Future of AI and Online Safety

As AI continues to weave itself into everyday life, the report emphasizes both the potential benefits and challenges of its swift adoption. While AI enhances accessibility and productivity, the findings underscore the importance of ongoing initiatives to advocate for responsible use and to safeguard digital environments, especially for younger audiences.
