Artificial Intelligence: India Leading the Charge at WEF 2026
As the technology sector gathers on the frosty summits of Davos for the 2026 World Economic Forum (WEF), discussions have transitioned from the hypothetical benefits of Artificial Intelligence to its real-world, large-scale execution. In a unique discussion with Startup Superb, Mohit Joshi, Managing Director and Chief Executive Officer of Tech Mahindra, shared his perspectives on why India stands out as a leader in this shift, possessing the third-largest pool of AI-native talent.
Beyond the Back Office
India has long been seen as the ‘back office’ for global operations, but according to Joshi, the country has advanced significantly beyond basic voice transcription tasks. He emphasized the profound understanding and detailed industry-specific knowledge that Indian companies have developed over many years.
“It is impossible to change what one does not comprehend,” he explained, adding that India’s strength now lies in its substantial “third-largest pool of AI-native talent.”
India: A Global Bright Spot
In the context of worldwide economic challenges, Joshi highlighted India and the Middle East as the “two bright spots in the global economy.” He pointed out that the momentum surrounding the ‘India story’ is enhanced by advancements in international agreements and a change in AI focus.
“The emphasis has shifted from experimentation in labs to deriving value through extensive implementations, something the Indian industry excels at,” Joshi stated.
The Productivity Mirage
While certain experts at WEF 2026 predict that AI could lead to productivity increases of 25%, Joshi offered a more cautious viewpoint for large enterprises. He likened major corporations to “large cruise ships or tankers,” cautioning that transformation is a gradual process.
“To anticipate a 60% productivity increase in just one year is unrealistic,” he commented, adding that for the majority of sizable companies, “high single-digit growth” is a more attainable initial target, as improvements grow over time.
Future Outlook
Contemplating Tech Mahindra’s own evolution, Joshi expressed optimism for the upcoming year. With significant investments in AI education and an enhanced leadership team, he believes that the industry’s forward-thinking and aspirational nature will enable it to ascend the value chain.
