The Centre for Development of Advanced Computing (C-DAC) has been responsible for the creation of this processor as part of the government’s Microprocessor Development Programme (MDP). This initiative complements existing projects like the Digital India RISC-V programme, aiming to foster the design, testing, and prototyping of chips produced entirely within the nation. According to government reports, Dhruv64 is a product of these dedicated efforts that focus on generating indigenous technology to fulfil national requirements.
Technical Significance of Dhruv64
Dhruv64 stands out due to its technical features. Although India has previously developed smaller chip projects, the introduction of a 64-bit architecture and a 1.0 GHz dual-core design signifies a major advancement in terms of capability and practical application. This contemporary architecture enables the chip to accommodate an extensive variety of functions, ranging from embedded systems to intensive high-performance computing tasks, thereby enhancing India’s technological capabilities.
