AI and India’s Defence: Strengthening Indigenous Capabilities

AI stands as a pivotal force as India aims to bolster its defence without dependence on foreign technology. In light of the recent Pentagon standoff involving Anthropic’s Claude model and its implications in warfare, Indian entities, particularly Bengaluru-based Sarvam AI, are advancing discussions with the defence ministry to establish a Rs 300 crore Centre of Excellence (CoE) dedicated to developing native AI solutions for military applications.

Establishing a Centre of Excellence for AI Development

The envisioned CoE is expected to incorporate various intelligence units that will create AI systems tailored specifically to Indian data and operational scenarios. This includes factors such as the country’s diverse geographical landscape and varying climatic conditions. The AI models being developed will enhance advanced surveillance, reconnaissance, and decision-support functions within the armed forces, as noted by The Economic Times.

The Strategic Timing of AI Initiatives

This initiative comes at a critical juncture. Reports indicate that Anthropic’s Claude was engaged in active military operations in the US, which subsequently sparked a public dispute between the AI firm and the Pentagon. Anthropic expressed concerns regarding the deployment of its models in autonomous weapon systems or for extensive domestic surveillance purposes.

As the US and China escalate their efforts in producing large language models and the necessary infrastructure, worries have intensified surrounding potential national security risks associated with reliance on foreign-developed AI technologies.

AI Integration in Indian Military Operations

The Indian armed forces are progressively integrating AI into their operations. During last year’s Operation Sindoor, defence officials disclosed that AI was employed to analyse sensor data, weapon feeds, and additional inputs for identifying enemy positions within Pakistan. Furthermore, AI-driven meteorological systems played a crucial role in long-range precision targeting by examining 26 years of historical weather data.

The Role of AI in Modern Warfare

The broader narrative reflects an exponential growth of AI within contemporary conflicts. In the ongoing Ukraine-Russia war, both factions have utilised AI for intelligence collection, data interpretation, and autonomous drone attacks.

Sarvam AI’s Contributions to the Tech Landscape

Sarvam AI gained significant attention earlier this year when it unveiled homegrown large language models at the India AI Impact Summit.

Military Application of AI Beyond Language Models

Despite this innovation, the defence CoE emphasised that military-related AI functionalities extend far beyond just language models. The essential focus lies on industrial-scale data processing to enhance command, control, communications, computers, intelligence, surveillance, and reconnaissance (C4ISR) systems, aimed at expediting targeting and decision-making capabilities.

AI is anticipated to play a growing role in various domains, including unmanned aerial systems, satellite operations, integrated air and missile defence, naval technologies, and electronic warfare strategies.
