Instagram Now Supports 3:4 Aspect Ratio Photo Uploads

Instagram has introduced an update that enables users to upload photos in the widely-used 3:4 aspect ratio, eliminating the need for cropping or adding borders to adhere to previous restrictions. This improvement aligns the platform with the typical settings of most smartphone cameras, which usually capture images in the 3:4 format.

Changes to Photo Dimensions on Instagram

Previously, Instagram allowed square (1:1) and slightly taller (4:5) image formats, compelling users to crop or adjust their photos to fit. With the added 3:4 support, both individual images and multi-photo carousels can be shared exactly as captured, maintaining the original framing and visual integrity.

Official Confirmation from Instagram

Instagram’s head, Adam Mosseri, validated this update via Threads, explaining that the platform now accommodates 3:4 aspect ratio photos – the standard format for nearly all phone cameras. He noted that users can now upload a 3:4 image, and it will be displayed precisely as it was taken.

Visual Comparison of Aspect Ratios

The company also presented a side-by-side comparison through its broadcast channel, demonstrating the visual differences between 4:5 and 3:4 formats. Though the change may seem minor, it is a significant improvement for photographers and creators prioritising precision and composition.

Instagram’s Evolution in Photo Sharing

This update is part of Instagram’s continuous transformation from its initial square-only photo-sharing capabilities. The platform has progressively embraced mobile-first visual formats, including vertical Stories and Reels, and earlier this year, began showcasing rectangular photo frames within profile grids, reflecting modern content creation trends.

Benefits for Users and Creators

These modifications signify Instagram’s move towards a more adaptable and user-centric design, benefiting both casual users and content creators who aim to present their work without compromise.
