Instagram Expands Interactive Map Feature in India
Instagram is introducing its interactive Map feature to India while enhancing controls to help users better understand when their location is being shared. This update comes after initial confusion followed its launch in the United States and Canada last August.
Clarifying Location Sharing
When the Map was initially launched, various social media posts circulated, cautioning users to disable location sharing, incorrectly claiming it was enabled by default. The head of Instagram, Adam Mosseri, quickly addressed these concerns, clarifying that users’ locations are only visible when they explicitly choose to share them.
Enhanced Indicators for Location Sharing
To reinforce this understanding, Instagram is implementing more visible indicators to display location-sharing status. A new label will be positioned at the top of the Map, allowing users to easily see whether their location is being shared or if device location is turned off. Additionally, an indicator beneath a user’s profile photo in the Notes tray on the DMs page will indicate when location sharing is off.
Addressing Common Misunderstandings
The company is also tackling another frequent misconception. Many users thought that tagging a location in posts meant disclosing their live location on the Map since their profile pictures appeared above the content. To clarify this, Instagram has now removed these profile pictures, ensuring it is understood that location tags only show where content was posted, not users’ current locations.
Educational Reminders for Users
Furthermore, Instagram is rolling out an educational reminder that explains how location tags on Stories, Reels, and posts are depicted on the Map. To enhance this clarity, users will now receive a preview of how their content will be displayed on the Map prior to publication.
Purpose of the Map Feature
Instagram has stated that the Map feature is intended to facilitate easier coordination for friends meeting up and exploring posts shared from specific locations. It also enables users to browse location-based content shared or liked by friends and creators, even if they decide not to share their own location.
