This trend poses significant challenges for social media platforms like Instagram, as they must manage, filter, and promote high-quality content.

Challenges of AI-Generated Content

As concerns surrounding AI-generated content grow, Mosseri has pointed out the difficulty in determining what is real, original, or genuinely human-created. He commented that nothing is inherently real anymore. For much of his life, he believed that photographs and videos primarily represented accurate representations of real-life moments. However, he acknowledged that this perception is changing, and adaptation to this new reality may take years.

Mosseri noted that trust in online content has diminished, as scepticism is now a prevalent mindset. He advised users to question the authenticity of what they encounter and to consider the source before accepting content as real. He mentioned that this shift may be uncomfortable, as humans have a natural tendency to trust their eyes.

Instagram’s Current Struggles

Additionally, Mosseri discussed the challenges Instagram currently faces. He emphasized that we are at the dawn of “infinite synthetic content,” where the concept of authenticity is increasingly complicated by its infinite reproducibility. Consequently, Instagram is under pressure to adapt to this rapidly evolving trend. He suggested the need for platforms to label AI-generated content and verify authentic content to help users distinguish between the real and the synthetic. Users should remember that not everything seen online is credible or authentic unless it originates from a trustworthy source.
