Intel Collaborates with SpaceX, xAI, and Tesla for the Terafab Project

Intel, a prominent player in the semiconductor industry, is collaborating with SpaceX, xAI, and Tesla to back Elon Musk’s Terafab initiative, a U.S. semiconductor production facility located in Texas. This project will focus on developing processors designed to power the next generation of robotics and data centres.

Intel announced the partnership through a post on X, stating that their capability to design, produce, and package ultra-high-performance chips at scale will significantly enhance Terafab’s objective of generating 1 TW per year of computing power necessary for future advancements in AI and robotics.

An Overview of the Terafab Project

On March 21, Elon Musk unveiled the Terafab project, which is intended to serve as a large-scale semiconductor facility that will generate substantial AI computing capabilities. The goal is to achieve an output of up to 1 terawatt of compute annually. The factory is set to initiate operations with an initial production capacity of 100,000 wafers per month, with the pilot phase projected to cost approximately $20 to $25 billion.

Intel’s Role in the Terafab Initiative

As a manufacturing partner, Intel will contribute its extensive chip-building know-how to help realise Elon Musk’s ambitions. The firm is poised to expedite Terafab’s objectives through its comprehensive capabilities that encompass the full semiconductor stack.

Intel’s 18A process node, currently operational at its Chandler, Arizona facility at around 40,000 wafer starts each month, is anticipated to form the backbone of Terafab’s earliest production.

According to Intel CEO Lip-Bu Tan, this partnership is vital for reinstating Intel’s prominent role in the AI chip manufacturing sector. The company is currently contending with stiff competition from rivals such as Nvidia and AMD, which have gained ground by prioritising design while outsourcing manufacturing.

Following a recent meeting with Elon Musk, Tan referred to Terafab as a “step change,” indicating its potential to substantially alter the industry landscape. Furthermore, Intel is set to receive support from leading global firms including SpaceX, xAI, and Tesla.

This collaboration also has the potential to reinforce Intel’s IDM 2.0 strategy, which focuses on designing and manufacturing chips at scale. Consequently, the partnership positions Intel as a pivotal contributor to the Terafab project, which Musk considers the most ambitious chip fabrication endeavour to date.

Following the announcement of this partnership, Intel’s stock saw an increase of over 2%, according to the most recent information available.
