Uber for Teens: Safe Rides for Teenagers in India
Uber for Teens is now available in India, enabling parents and guardians to create accounts for teenagers aged 13 to 17, which provides enhanced control over their transportation. Originally inaugurated in the United States in 2023, this feature has now been rolled out in more than 50 countries globally.
This service empowers teenagers to request Uber rides from their devices while allowing guardians to track their journeys in real time, impose ride restrictions, and utilise additional safety measures.
Indian users will find this new service accessible in the Uber app, with major cities like Bengaluru, Delhi NCR, and Mumbai being the first to obtain it. A report from TechCrunch indicates that Uber intends to extend the Uber for Teens service to 35 more cities across India shortly, including Ahmedabad, Chennai, and Hyderabad.
Setting Up Uber for Teens
To create an account, parents or guardians can invite their teenager by entering their contact information in the Uber app. Upon acceptance, a teen account is set up with integrated safety features.
Safety Features of Uber for Teens
Uber has implemented several safety-centric features for teen accounts to ensure that parents feel secure:
- Guardian Oversight: Parents and guardians can monitor their teenager’s ride in real-time and receive alerts for every trip.
- Driver Screening: Only drivers who are highly-rated and have undergone background checks are matched with teen riders.
- Audio Recording: Should a call occur between the driver and the teen, parents can access an audio recording for enhanced security.
- Destination Lock: Once a ride is booked, drivers are unable to alter the drop-off location.
- PIN Verification & RideCheck: Additional safeguards like PIN verification confirm that the right driver is picking up the teenager.
Before establishing a teen account, guardians are required to link a credit or debit card to their account; however, once this is done, teenagers can select their own payment methods. Additionally, parents have the option to limit the number of rides their teen can book each month.
In the Q4 2024 financial report, Uber announced that Uber for Teens is operational in nearly 50 countries, with India being one of the most recent markets to embrace this feature.
