iQOO Neo 10R: The Latest Flagship Killer

iQOO has cemented its status as a provider of high-performance smartphones at competitive prices, often being referred to as the “flagship killer.” The Neo 9 Pro exemplified this notion with its robust power, rapid charging capabilities, and well-rounded camera system, all without a hefty price tag. Now, one year later, the iQOO Neo 10R makes its entrance with some upgrades rather than complete overhauls.

Design: Subtle Refinements but Familiar Looks

The design of the Neo 10R closely mirrors that of its predecessor; however, there are subtle updates, particularly in the back panel’s finishes. The MoonKnight Titanium version features a sleek, understated design reminiscent of the iPhone 15 Pro’s Titanium Gray. In contrast, the Pixel Gradient model offers a striking lavender-to-white gradient, appealing to a younger, gamer-focused audience.

Even with the retention of a polycarbonate frame to keep production costs manageable, the overall build is impressively solid. Weighing in at 196g and measuring just 7.9mm, the Neo 10R accommodates a notably larger battery than its forerunner. Additionally, it now carries an IP65 rating for water and dust resistance, which is a small but significant enhancement for durability.

Display: Consistent Quality Remains

The 6.78-inch AMOLED display is unchanged from earlier generations, offering a 120Hz refresh rate alongside a 300Hz touch sampling rate. While leading brands experiment with curved displays, iQOO wisely opts for a flat panel for improved usability, especially for gaming and daily use.

Equipped with HDR10+ support and high peak brightness levels, the display excels even under outdoor lighting. Though it’s not a major advancement, the original display was already among the best in its class.

Performance: Enhanced Power with Snapdragon 8 Gen 3

At the core of the iQOO Neo 10R is the Snapdragon 8 Gen 3, which supersedes the previous generation’s chip. This enhancement results in better power efficiency and superior gaming performance due to Qualcomm’s latest improvements.

The device is available in two configurations for RAM and storage:

  • 8GB LPDDR5X RAM + 128GB UFS 3.1 storage
  • 12GB LPDDR5X RAM + 256GB UFS 4.1 storage

With faster storage speeds, app launches and game loading times are noticeably swifter on the higher-end model. While the UFS 3.1 variant might feel somewhat outdated, it still performs adequately for day-to-day usage.

Battery and Charging: Impressive Capacity with Some Trade-offs

A distinguished upgrade is the 6,400mAh battery now utilising silicon-carbon technology, which achieves a higher power density without adding to the phone’s thickness. However, the charging speed has decreased from 120W on the Neo 9 Pro to 80W.

This reduction could be perceived as a drawback, yet real-world charging times are unlikely to be significantly longer, especially with the extended battery life being a favourable trade-off for those prioritising longevity over ultra-fast charging.

Cameras: Sensor Updates Lead to Higher Expectations

While the camera setup may appear similar at first glance, iQOO has replaced the sensors with newer models:

  • 50MP primary camera (Sony IMX882) featuring OIS
  • 8MP ultra-wide (Galaxy Core GC08A3-WA1XA)
  • 32MP selfie camera (Galaxy Core GC32E1-WA1XA)

The Sony IMX882 is anticipated to deliver enhanced low-light performance, and the upgraded 32MP front camera should elevate selfie quality. However, the absence of a dedicated telephoto lens means that zoom capabilities will still depend on digital cropping.

Further testing will be required to evaluate the extent of improvement from these sensor updates, but expectations are considerable as the Neo 9 Pro already showcased a competent primary camera.

Software: Funtouch OS 15 with AI Features

The Neo 10R operates on Funtouch OS 15, based on Android 15, placing a more significant focus on AI-driven enhancements. Although the user interface leans towards extensive personalisation, iQOO has embedded native AI tools aimed at intelligent app management and improved photography capabilities.

Funtouch OS has advanced significantly in terms of responsiveness, and with the increasing expectation for sustained software updates across the industry, iQOO must ensure the Neo 10R receives ongoing support to remain competitive.

Can the Neo 10R Maintain Its “Flagship Killer” Title?

The iQOO Neo 10R has a starting price of Rs 26,999 for the 8GB + 128GB configuration, making it compete against formidable rivals. Competitors such as the Nothing Phone 3a, Poco F6, and OnePlus Nord CE 4 all inhabit this price range, each offering unique advantages in design, camera quality, and user experience.

While the Snapdragon 8 Gen 3, enhanced battery capacity, and fresh camera sensors present substantial improvements, reductions in charging speed and incremental design changes may not seem groundbreaking. Nevertheless, for users seeking high performance, gaming optimisation, and long-lasting battery life, the iQOO Neo 10R continues to make a strong argument in its favour.

A comprehensive review will provide insight into its competitive stance against alternatives, but it’s evident that iQOO has made refinements rather than outright redefinitions of its “flagship killer” strategy, which may resonate with many users.
