Meta and Broadcom Partnership for Next-Generation AI Chips

Meta has announced a collaboration with Broadcom to develop next-generation MTIA (Meta Training and Inference Accelerator) chips aimed at enhancing Meta applications and services. The social media leader plans to launch an initial set of AI chips with a total capacity of 1 gigawatt, which will eventually expand to several gigawatts using Broadcom’s technology.

Changes in Leadership at Broadcom

As part of this broader partnership, it has been indicated that Hock Tan, CEO of Broadcom, will step down from the board of directors and assume the role of an advisor at Meta. This significant change was disclosed in the latest filing to the US Securities and Exchange Commission and confirmed in a blog post by Meta.

Innovations in AI Chip Technology

According to Broadcom, MTIA chips will represent the industry’s first 2nm AI compute accelerator designed for long-term infrastructure deployment. Meta’s co-founder and CEO, Mark Zuckerberg, remarked that Meta is teaming up with Broadcom on chip design, packaging, and networking to construct a substantial computing foundation necessary for providing personal superintelligence to billions.

Collaboration for Enhanced AI Infrastructure

Meta has revealed that Broadcom will work closely with its team on designing AI chips, ensuring efficient packaging, and establishing robust networking systems. This collaboration is aimed at providing the extensive computing backbone essential for supporting real-time AI functionalities for billions of users.

Utilising Broadcom’s XPU Platform

The partnership leverages Broadcom’s XPU platform, which facilitates the development of custom AI chips while modernising Meta’s AI hardware for future generations. Additionally, Broadcom will supply advanced Ethernet technology to ensure rapid data transfer and seamless communication across vast clusters of AI machines.

Hock Tan has noted that this initial deployment of MTIA is merely the start of a long-term, multi-generational plan designed to accommodate the expected massive growth in the coming years, underscoring Broadcom’s unmatched expertise in AI networking and the effectiveness of their foundational XPU custom accelerator platform.
