Meta to Deactivate Accounts of Australian Users Under 16

Meta is set to deactivate the accounts of all Australian users aged under 16 on its primary platforms, including Instagram, Facebook, and Threads, starting this December. This significant policy shift is a direct reaction to new, stringent social media laws introduced by the Australian government, positioning Meta as the first considerable technology company to adhere to the new regulations designed to safeguard minors online.

Notification Process for Affected Users

The company has commenced the notification process for users it believes are aged between 13 and 15. This is being done through in-app messages, emails, and text alerts, informing them that their accounts will soon be deactivated. The comprehensive process of shutting down existing accounts and preventing new sign-ups for those under 16 is set to start on December 4th. Meta expects to complete full implementation by December 10th, the date when the law officially takes effect.

Impact on Young Users

According to Australia’s internet regulator, this action will influence a substantial number of young individuals. Approximately 150,000 Facebook users and 350,000 Instagram users in the 13-to-15 age range are predicted to lose access to these platforms.

Legislation Overview

Australia’s ban is considered one of the most extensive governmental efforts to control minors’ access to social media platforms globally. The legislation imposes a clear legal obligation on social media companies to take “reasonable steps” to prevent underage access. Non-compliance with these regulations poses significant financial risks, with potential penalties for violations soaring up to A$49.5 million (about $32.09 million/Rs 283.85 Crore).

Age Assurance Techniques

To enforce these restrictions, Meta has confirmed it will implement various age assurance methods. The company has declared it will follow a “data minimisation approach,” which entails requesting additional verification information only when there are valid reasons to doubt a user’s stated age. Compliance, according to Meta’s global head of safety, will be an “ongoing and multi-layered process.”

Options for Affected Teenage Users

Teenage users who will be impacted by this change are being presented with various options before their accounts are deactivated. These options include downloading personal data, choosing to permanently delete their accounts, or updating their contact information so they can be informed when they reach 16, allowing them to rejoin the platforms at a later date.
