Meta Ray-Ban Display: The Future of Smart Glasses

At the annual developer event Meta Connect 2025, the company showcased its most ambitious hardware to date — the Meta Ray-Ban Display, a fresh pair of smart glasses featuring a built-in display designed for applications, notifications, navigation, and real-time translations.

These innovative glasses, set at a price of $799 (approximately ₹70,000 in India), will launch on September 30. In contrast to last year’s futuristic Orion prototype, which was years away from being available, CEO Mark Zuckerberg emphasised that this model is a genuine product ready for consumers.

Breaking Free from Major Platforms

Meta has been striving to distance itself from the platforms of Apple and Google, where the majority of its services currently reside. Although the adoption of its VR headsets has not reached overwhelming levels, the company sees smart glasses as a potential pathway to achieving mainstream hardware success.

Features of the Meta Ray-Ban Display

The Meta Ray-Ban Display is developed to offer features that users will appreciate, all while being fashionable for daily wear, as noted by Zuckerberg during the keynote.

This new generation of glasses is created in collaboration with EssilorLuxottica and builds upon the success of the earlier Ray-Ban Meta line, which has already achieved millions of sales on a global scale.

Key features of the glasses include:

  • An AI assistant with cloud connectivity
  • Cameras, microphones, and speakers
  • A right-lens display for applications, messages, navigation, and translations

Introduction of the Neural Band

Alongside the glasses, Meta is introducing the Neural Band, a wrist-worn controller similar to a Fitbit. It employs electromyography (EMG) technology to detect signals from the brain to the hand, allowing users to navigate applications or select items with subtle hand movements without the need for screen interaction. Zuckerberg confirmed that it is water-resistant and offers up to 18 hours of battery life on a single charge.

Competition with Future Smart Glasses

While the Meta Ray-Ban Display showcases impressive technology, it remains a step behind the Orion glasses introduced by Meta last year, which featured advanced AR lenses and eye-tracking capabilities. Analysts predict that both Apple and Google will introduce their own versions of smart glasses in the near future, potentially integrating deeply with iOS and Android to gain a competitive advantage.

Despite the competition, Meta is focusing on becoming the first to market with a readily accessible consumer product. By allowing direct access to applications such as Instagram, WhatsApp, and Facebook through the lens, the company aims to capture the interest of younger users seeking stylish yet functional wearable technology.
