Microsoft’s Workforce Changes and AI Emphasis

Microsoft is considering a slowdown in its hiring initiatives, reducing team sizes, or proceeding with layoffs in the near future. Amy Hood, Microsoft’s Chief Financial Officer, suggests that the workforce may shrink as the company prioritises investments in AI, restructuring, and cost management. This information emerged alongside the recent quarterly earnings report for FY26.

Details from Amy Hood on Microsoft’s Financial Outlook

According to a report by Business Insider, Hood outlined Microsoft’s expectations for the upcoming financial year, which runs from July 2026 to June 2027, during a discussion with an analyst. She noted that the company is evolving its operational methods to enhance agility and pace, leading to an anticipated yearly decrease in headcount.

Changes in Team Structure

Prior to the earnings call, Hood circulated an internal memo to employees that indicated Microsoft’s intention to form smaller, more focused teams. This new structure aims to clarify responsibilities, pushing employees to be more accountable for their outputs. The memo also mentioned ongoing restructuring efforts, suggesting that pressures for increased efficiency would persist.

Recently, Microsoft offered voluntary retirement options to approximately 7% of its US workforce, impacting nearly 8,750 employees.

Financial Performance Amid Workforce Adjustments

Despite plans to trim its workforce, Microsoft’s earnings report revealed an 18% rise in revenue, totalling $82.9 billion. Satya Nadella, the CEO of Microsoft, mentioned that the focus remains on delivering cloud and AI solutions that allow businesses to maximise their outcomes in the evolving computing landscape.

Growth in AI Revenues

Nadella also stated that Microsoft’s AI segment achieved an annual revenue run rate exceeding $37 billion, marking a 123% increase year-over-year. Additionally, the Intelligent Cloud revenue surged by 30% to reach $34.7 billion, with the company planning to increase its investment in AI infrastructure.

Revised Relationship with OpenAI

Microsoft previously announced plans to revise its agreement with OpenAI, securing a 20% share of the startup’s revenue until 2030, regardless of technological advancements. However, Microsoft will no longer have exclusive ownership of OpenAI’s products and models. Meanwhile, OpenAI is expanding its collaboration with Amazon, integrating its models and coding resources into AWS.
