Microsoft Layoffs Impacting 9,000 Employees

Microsoft is preparing to eliminate over 9,000 jobs, which constitutes around 4% of its global workforce. This move is part of ongoing organisational realignments intended to adjust the company to evolving strategic objectives. The announcement, made on 2 July 2025, is notable as it represents the largest reduction in staff since the previous round of layoffs in 2023.

With a workforce exceeding 228,000 members worldwide, Microsoft has not provided specific details regarding which regions or departments will be affected. Nevertheless, the job cuts are anticipated to touch various teams and encompass a range of experience levels.

Official Comments on the Layoffs

A spokesperson for Microsoft conveyed to AFP and CNBC that the company is committed to making necessary organisational updates to strategically position both the business and its teams for success amid a changing marketplace. The spokesperson further explained that such changes are part of regular workforce assessments, highlighting that adjustments occur even during prosperous times to align with the strategic demands of the enterprise.

Recent Workforce Reductions

This latest layoff announcement follows a pattern of workforce reductions that started earlier in the year. In May 2025, Microsoft eliminated around 6,000 jobs, followed by another 300 in June. Additionally, in January, a performance-driven reduction involved 1% of its staff. In 2023, the company made the decision to lay off 10,000 employees. This most recent development marks the second-largest mass layoff for Microsoft since 2014, when nearly 18,000 jobs were cut.

Possible Reasons Behind the Layoffs

Although Microsoft has not provided explicit reasons for the layoffs, industry reports indicate that the rapid advancement of AI-powered tools, such as coding assistants, may be driving internal changes. The company has been progressively focusing on the integration of artificial intelligence within its products and operational processes. Earlier in the same year, Microsoft CEO Satya Nadella mentioned that nearly 20-30% of all coding work is performed by AI. Furthermore, a recent internal memorandum revealed that some departments at Microsoft have mandated AI utilisation and associated this with employee performance evaluations.

Empowering Employees with AI

According to Microsoft’s statement, these technological advancements are designed to enable employees to dedicate more time to meaningful tasks.

Timing of the Announcement

The announcement comes at an atypical time during Microsoft’s fiscal year, which generally observes structural adjustments at its conclusion. The scale and timing of the layoffs reflect broader trends in the industry, as technology companies continue to refine their operations while boosting investments in artificial intelligence.
