Nothing Headphone (1) Launch and Nothing Phone (3) Announcement
Nothing, a British consumer tech firm, is preparing for a significant product launch on 1 July, where it will introduce its inaugural over-ear headphones, the Nothing Headphone (1), alongside its highly anticipated flagship smartphone, the Nothing Phone (3). Both products will be unveiled during a launch event in London at 10:30 PM IST, a detail confirmed by co-founder and CEO Carl Pei during his keynote address at SXSW London.
Overview of the Nothing Headphone (1)
The Nothing Headphone (1) marks the brand’s initial venture into the over-ear audio sector, expanding its current product range which includes in-ear earbuds like the Ear (1), Ear (2), and Ear (Stick). Pei highlighted on stage that this is the company’s first over-the-head headphone, with many users expressing interest in such a product. He described the launch as signalling a “new chapter” for the company, known for its community-oriented development and distinctive transparent design approach.
Collaboration with KEF
The upcoming headphones are predicted to be the first concrete product resulting from Nothing’s recent collaboration with the British audio brand KEF. When the partnership was announced last month, it was aimed at exploring “new frontiers in sound innovation.” Although Nothing has not directly confirmed that the Headphone (1) stems from this partnership, it appears to be a strong possibility.
Design Insights
A video shared on the company’s YouTube channel showcased the design team expressing their dissatisfaction with existing headphone choices, claiming many are either visually unappealing or excessively priced, specifically mentioning Apple’s AirPods Max. The design team’s objective is to develop an over-ear headphone that not only has a unique visual presence but also delivers excellent audio performance while being affordably priced.
Pricing and Specifications
While nothing official has been disclosed regarding specifications or pricing, a report from 9to5Google indicates that the Headphone (1) might be priced at $299 in the United States. This price point positions it significantly lower than the AirPods Max, which are priced at $600 (₹59,900) in India, while also aiming to compete with them in terms of sound quality.
Nothings Phone (3) Launch
The concurrent launch of the Nothing Phone (3), characterised as the brand’s “first true flagship,” enhances the hype surrounding the event. Pei alluded to the fact that while smartphones are currently the predominant consumer tech products, the company is also exploring other possibilities. He stated that “The smartphone is the most important product today, but that doesn’t mean it’s going to be the most important product forever.” He expressed that success in the next five years would be characterised by discovering a new type of product.
