Nothing Phone (3): An Exciting Leap in Smartphone Design

Nothing Phone (3) continues to make waves in the smartphone industry, reminiscent of OnePlus’s earlier disruptive spirit. This device transcends the traditional Android smartphone design. It is unconventional, bold, and represents the company’s most ambitious offering to date, featuring impressive hardware and creative design elements. However, a rising concern exists: has Nothing potentially priced itself out of reach for its loyal fanbase?

Distinctive Visual Appeal

Starting with its appearance, the Phone (3) stands out as truly unique. The back is crafted from a combination of transparent materials and layered textures, highlighted by a circular Glyph Matrix in the upper right that serves as a secondary display for notifications such as time, battery life, and incoming calls. It is a more daring design compared to Phone (2), albeit less streamlined. The off-centre placement of the camera module has provoked varied reactions online. Initially, it took time for acceptance, but now its peculiar charm resonates.

The previous standalone LED strips from earlier Nothing models have been replaced by a Matrix display, which features a circular array of 489 LEDs. Users can enjoy games like Rock, Paper, Scissors and Spin the Bottle, adding a playful element.

Display, Performance and Software

The device boasts a stunning 6.67-inch 1.5K flexible AMOLED screen with a 120Hz refresh rate and an eye-popping 4,500-nit peak brightness. This display ranks among the finest in its category, although Netflix has yet to authorise it for HDR content.

Driven by the Snapdragon 8s Gen 4, which sits just beneath the flagship 8 Gen 3 processors, the daily performance remains impressively smooth. Everything operates swiftly, with seamless multitasking capabilities. Running on Nothing OS 3.5, this Android skin maintains its identity and doesn’t resemble a clone of others. The dot-based visual design, uncluttered menus, and elegant animations offer a delightful user experience.

An exciting addition is the Essential Key positioned on the side of the device, which activates Essential Space—a dedicated area for voice notes, screenshots, and reminders. While written notes cannot be stored, the transcription features are beneficial. Essential Search serves as an intelligent universal search tool. Simply input a query and activate AI to receive results using Google’s Gemini models. This development places Nothing in line with similar functions being rolled out by Apple’s Siri.

Cameras: Reasonable Quality Yet Variability

On paper, the specifications present a fantastic camera system: three 50MP sensors (main, periscope, and ultra-wide), along with a 50MP front-facing camera. However, real-world performance reveals some inconsistencies. In bright lighting conditions, the Phone (3) produces clear and detailed images. However, as lighting conditions worsen, dynamic range becomes compromised—shadows may appear overly dark while highlights may be overly bright. Video recording operates smoothly at 4K60 and the new Ultra XDR mode looks promising, though it still does not match the colour accuracy of competitors like Pixel and iPhone.

Impressive Battery Life and Charging Capabilities

The Indian variant features a robust 5,500mAh battery (with global versions being slightly smaller), and the overall battery performance is commendable. After intense usage throughout the day, including seven hours of screen time, a considerable amount of charge remained. It supports 65W wired charging, 15W wireless charging, 7.5W reverse wired charging, and 5W reverse wireless charging. Achieving a complete charge requires less than an hour.

Evaluation of its Value

Ultimately, Nothing Phone (3) offers a refreshing, engaging experience that feels personal and innovative. The challenge lies within its pricing.

Set at ₹79,999, this model is directly competing with established brands such as iPhone 16, Samsung Galaxy S25, and Pixel 9 Pro—exceptional contenders.

Nothing Phone (3) embodies a vibrant and fast-paced portrayal of what a flagship smartphone can become. While it may not be without flaws and may not appeal to everyone, for those who appreciate technology infused with character and are less concerned with brand reputation, it is certainly worth considering. It may be wise to wait for price reductions or promotional offers.
