OnePlus 15R: Affordable Flagship Performance

OnePlus 15R models are recognised for delivering flagship-level performance and features while remaining budget-friendly. The series has consistently impressed users over the years, and the OnePlus 15R represents a significant progression compared to its earlier versions. Although the specifications of the OnePlus 15R appear impressive initially, its real-world performance upholds those expectations.

The OnePlus 15R has been in use for approximately two weeks, showcasing a robust equilibrium between top-tier performance and cost-effectiveness. It is equipped with the Snapdragon 8 Gen 5 processor and a substantial 7400mAh battery, proving to be a standout in its category. Enjoyable gaming and seamless multitasking on this device are complemented by its refined user interface, which might encourage potential buyers to consider this model. Nonetheless, a few compromises may leave some users wishing for additional features. Let’s delve deeper to investigate what makes the OnePlus 15R a competitive mid-range flagship.

OnePlus 15R Review: Design

Mirroring the flagship OnePlus 15 model, the OnePlus 15R also presents a redesigned aesthetic, showcasing a new squircle-shaped camera arrangement that marks a departure from the conventional circular camera style. It boasts a glass rear and aluminium frame, lending it a premium feel. In actual use, the device may feel somewhat boxy in hand, yet its well-distributed weight of 219 grams ensures it does not feel cumbersome. While the boxy design may not appeal to everyone, it offers a comfortable grip. However, a sleeker form is preferred by some users, though others may appreciate the larger dimensions.

In addition to its premium aesthetics, the smartphone offers added durability, boasting ratings of IP66, IP68, IP69, and IP69K to safeguard against water and dust ingress. The OnePlus 15R is available in three colour variations: Charcoal Black, Mint Breeze, and Electric Violet. The Mint Breeze variant, which features light green and white tones, was received for review, although the matte finish of the Charcoal Black was particularly appealing.

OnePlus 15R Review: Display

The OnePlus 15R is equipped with a 6.83-inch 1.5K LTPS AMOLED display that includes a 165Hz refresh rate and peaks at 1800 nits brightness. Among the compromises previously mentioned is the lack of an LTPO display. While this difference may not be glaring, the hardware alterations regarding refresh rates enhance user experience by making it smoother and more efficient. However, the LTPS display in the OnePlus 15R still produces sharp visuals and high-refresh-rate performance.

With HDR10+ support, the OnePlus 15R delivers vibrant colours and deeper contrasts. As a result, gaming and content consumption on this smartphone feel more refined and immersive. Nonetheless, the maximum brightness could have been improved, as its predecessor offered a peak brightness of up to 4500 nits, which resulted in slight challenges under direct sunlight. Still, for gaming and browsing purposes, the display of the OnePlus 15R meets expectations well within its price category.

OnePlus 15R Review: Performance and Software

The OnePlus 15R harnesses the power of the Snapdragon 8 Gen 5 processor, tailored specifically for OnePlus. It features an Oryon CPU, Adreno 840 GPU, G2 WiFi chip, and LPDDR5x Ultra RAM, all of which work in harmony to deliver outstanding performance. The smartphone exceeded expectations in multitasking, gaming, and demanding daily tasks.

For avid mobile gamers, the OnePlus 15R stands out as one of the best options within its price bracket. It comes equipped with a dedicated Touch Response Chip and a specialised WiFi chip to maintain stable pings and minimise lag. Testing popular graphic-intensive games such as Genshin Impact, BGMI, and COD Mobile demonstrated that the OnePlus 15R maintained stable frame rates, providing smooth and responsive gameplay. Even during prolonged gaming sessions, slight heating was noticeable; however, the 360-degree cryo velocity cooling system effectively managed thermals without any disruptions.

On the software side, the OnePlus 15R runs on Oxygen OS 16, based on Android 16. This iteration offers a smooth, clutter-free experience with minimal pre-loaded applications and a streamlined interface. OnePlus has earned a reputation for allowing extensive customisation, whether pertaining to the lock screen, home screen, or control centre. Additionally, the software incorporates various AI-driven features such as AI writer, AI scan, and Plus Mind, further enhancing the user’s experience.

OnePlus 15R Review: Camera

The camera system on the OnePlus 15R features a dual-lens setup, consisting of a 50MP main camera with a Sony IMX906 sensor and an 8MP ultrawide camera. Unfortunately, the absence of a telephoto lens this year represents a noticeable downgrade, limiting zoom capabilities to just 2x. Consequently, capturing high-quality close-up shots is challenging, particularly for a phone priced around Rs 50,000.

The main sensor produces decent photographs, although they do not rank among the best in its category. Despite impressive performance in battery and processing, the camera does not fully meet expectations. In bright conditions, it manages satisfactory captures with commendable detail and relatively accurate colours. However, post-processing sometimes oversaturates natural colours, which may result in inconsistency.

Night-time or low-light photography yields less promising results, often lacking in clarity and colour consistency. The 8MP ultrawide camera offers average performance, suggesting that photography enthusiasts might want to explore other options.

Conversely, the 32MP selfie camera performs admirably, producing natural skin tones and vibrant colours with good detail.

OnePlus 15R Review: Battery

The OnePlus 15R is powered by an impressive 7400mAh battery, providing exceptional longevity. Even under heavy usage, the device can last approximately 26 to 28 hours on a single charge. Daily activities such as photography, browsing, casual to moderate gaming, social media interaction, and OTT viewing allowed the smartphone to perform for nearly two days before requiring a recharge. With this model, users can forget about battery anxiety due to its remarkable enduring capabilities.

In terms of charging, the OnePlus 15R supports 80W wired charging, which includes a charger in the box. It takes roughly 45 minutes to fully charge the device from 0 to 100%, a commitment that OnePlus has consistently upheld. However, it should be noted that wireless charging is not supported.

OnePlus 15R Review: Verdict

So, who is the ideal user for the OnePlus 15R? Mobile gamers, OTT streamers, multitaskers, and anyone who prioritises battery longevity will appreciate this device. The OnePlus 15R delivers flagship-like performance seamlessly, and the 165Hz display performs well for daily tasks and gaming. The significant 7400mAh battery further supports sustained usage. Nonetheless, the absence of certain features such as the LTPO display, telephoto lens, and below-par camera performance may detract from the overall experience. Despite these considerations, the OnePlus 15R represents a compelling upgrade over its predecessor, positioning itself as a solid choice at Rs 47,999.
