Age Prediction Feature by OpenAI for Enhanced User Safety
Age prediction is a new initiative introduced by OpenAI to ChatGPT users worldwide. This feature is designed to identify users under the age of 18, ensuring a safer, more suitable digital environment. This initiative aligns with OpenAI’s plans for an “Adult Mode” expected to launch in early 2026. By verifying age, the platform can better filter unsuitable content and enforce more stringent protections for young users.
OpenAI declared in a blog post that young individuals require technology that not only opens doors to opportunities but also safeguards their well-being. The organisation further emphasized that this approach allows adults to utilise the tools freely while adhering to safety protocols.
How Does the Age Prediction Feature Work on ChatGPT?
OpenAI’s blog post explained that the age prediction feature functions using a model that assesses whether a user is below 18 years of age. It evaluates various behavioural and account-related signals, including usage patterns and interaction times. The organisation indicates that this model continuously evolves by learning from practical applications to enhance its accuracy over time.
When a user is identified as being under 18, ChatGPT automatically limits access to sensitive materials, which may include graphic violence, risky viral challenges, and adult-themed content. If an account is incorrectly flagged as under 18, users can regain unrestricted access by verifying their age through selfie-based confirmation or a secure identity verification service.
Parental Controls for Improved Teen Experience
Additionally, OpenAI is enhancing the experience for teenagers through parental controls. Parents have the option to establish quiet hours, receive notifications during distressing situations, and customise the memory functionality involved in AI training. As OpenAI prepares to introduce “Adult Mode,” age verification will be crucial in restricting age-sensitive content to appropriate users only.
