OpenAI Explores Acquisition of Stealth AI Startup Led by Sam Altman and Jony Ive

OpenAI is currently engaged in advanced talks to acquire a covert artificial intelligence (AI) startup established by its CEO Sam Altman alongside renowned industrial designer Jony Ive. This under-the-radar venture, which is working on AI-centric consumer devices, could represent OpenAI’s boldest move into hardware so far.

Potential Acquisition Details

A report from The Information indicates that OpenAI is contemplating both a complete acquisition and a possible partnership with this stealth startup, which was discreetly founded last year. Sources familiar with the negotiations estimate that the acquisition deal may surpass $500 million (approximately ₹4,288 crore).

Leadership and Product Development

Jony Ive, the previous Chief Design Officer at Apple, recognised for designing the original iPhone, is said to be spearheading the creative vision for the startup through his design firm, LoveFrom. The startup is believed to be developing several early-stage product designs, including a device resembling a phone but lacking a screen, steering away from conventional smartphone features. Some prototypes are reportedly influenced by the minimalist aesthetic of the first iPhone, although their final applications may vary greatly.

Innovative AI Gadgets and Interfaces

While information remains limited, insiders indicate that the startup might be exploring AI-driven household devices and unconventional computing interfaces. The existence of a functioning prototype is currently uncertain.

Team Transition to OpenAI

Should OpenAI decide to move forward with a full acquisition, it is anticipated that the product engineering team from the startup would merge with OpenAI. However, Tang Tan and Evans Hankey, former Apple design executives associated with the startup, are not expected to join OpenAI, even if a deal is finalised.

Connection Between Ive and Altman

Sam Altman was introduced to Jony Ive by Airbnb CEO Brian Chesky, who is considered one of LoveFrom’s early clients. Although Altman is not officially acknowledged as a co-founder of the startup, reports indicate that he is significantly engaged in the venture, although the details of his financial involvement are not publicly known.

OpenAI’s Hardware Expansion

The interest shown by OpenAI suggests a possible extension beyond software, particularly in the creation of dedicated hardware solutions for AI, reminiscent of the competition witnessed with products like the Humane AI Pin and Rabbit R1.
