OpenAI Projects Now Available to Free Users
OpenAI has introduced the Projects feature, which was previously exclusive to paying subscribers, now accessible to all free users of ChatGPT. This enhancement allows users to manage their conversations around specific subjects effectively. Users can now set custom guidelines for AI responses and limit the references to specific information and files, making Projects particularly advantageous for frequent ChatGPT users.
Enhanced File Upload Limits
With this update, OpenAI has also raised the file upload limits. Free users can now add up to five files per project, while Plus subscribers can upload 25 files, and Pro subscribers have the capability to upload up to 40 files. All users now have the option to personalise the colour and icon of each project, simplifying navigation.
OpenAI’s Announcement Highlights
OpenAI conveyed the following highlights in its announcement:
- Larger file uploads per project (up to 5 for Free, 25 for Plus, 40 for Pro/Business/Enterprise)
- Options for selecting colours and icons for enhanced customisation
- Project-specific memory controls enabling tailored context
Availability of Projects
Projects in ChatGPT are now accessible to free users. The feature is currently operational on the web and the ChatGPT application for Android. OpenAI indicated that the rollout for iOS users will occur in the coming days.
The recent feature rollout follows OpenAI’s ongoing strategy of providing functionalities that were once deemed as premium. Notable tools, including Deep Research and ChatGPT Voice, were initially offered only to paying subscribers before being made accessible to everyone. In a similar vein, GPT-5 was made available to free users, albeit with stricter usage limits compared to subscribed users.
