Self-Harm Prevention with Trusted Contact Feature on ChatGPT

Self-harm prevention is a critical area of focus for many technology companies. Apple has rolled out a new feature on ChatGPT known as ‘Trusted Contact’. This allows users to connect with a friend or family member for support. When ChatGPT recognises discussions related to self-harm, it will prompt the user to reach out to their designated trusted individual. OpenAI emphasizes that this feature is aimed at providing an additional layer of support during serious mental health crises.

Understanding How ‘Trusted Contact’ Works on ChatGPT

With the ‘Trusted Contact’ feature, users have the option to select an emergency contact, who can be notified by ChatGPT when there are indications of serious self-harm or suicidal thoughts. OpenAI explains that during challenging moments, reaching out can be daunting. The trusted contact feature aims to facilitate real-life connections when users need it most, following a straightforward four-step process from contact selection to notification.

Steps to Add a ‘Trusted Contact’ on ChatGPT

Here’s how users can add a ‘Trusted Contact’ on ChatGPT:

  1. Users should select one trusted adult, such as a friend or family member, to be their emergency contact on ChatGPT. Invitations can be sent via email, SMS, WhatsApp, or through in-app notifications.
  2. The chosen individual needs to accept the invitation within one week. If they do not respond or decline, the user will have to select a different contact.
  3. Should ChatGPT identify discussions related to suicide or self-harm, trained human reviewers may evaluate the conversation for any potential hazards.
  4. If there is a significant safety issue detected by the reviewers, ChatGPT can notify the trusted contact, prompting them to check in with the user. OpenAI assures that chat details or transcripts will not be shared.

Safety and Trust in Choosing Contacts

OpenAI stresses the importance of selecting individuals with whom one feels comfortable being open and who can be relied upon to respond thoughtfully. During the invitation process, ChatGPT provides a thorough explanation of its role and what safety notifications may entail if any concerning conversations about self-harm are identified.
