GPT-4o Model Reinstated for Paid ChatGPT Subscribers

GPT-4o has been reinstated by OpenAI for paid ChatGPT subscribers, following its brief replacement by the new GPT-5 model. This decision came in response to extensive user backlash over the loss of access to the older model, which many had incorporated into their daily activities.

Launch of GPT-5 and User Reactions

The introduction of GPT-5, hailed by OpenAI as its most sophisticated large language model to date, faced a variety of reactions despite claims of notable enhancements in writing and coding abilities. During a question-and-answer session on Reddit, numerous users conveyed to CEO Sam Altman that they found GPT-5 to be less capable and missing the more engaging personality that characterised GPT-4o. There were also concerns raised about the sudden discontinuation of legacy models without any prior notifications.

User Experiences with GPT-4o vs. GPT-5

One Reddit user articulated the contrast strongly, remarking that GPT-4o “genuinely engaged with me,” while GPT-5 provided responses that felt “cut-and-dry and corporate.” Additional users expressed dissatisfaction regarding the newly implemented real-time router, which aims to select the optimal model for specific tasks but reportedly fell short of its intended function. Altman admitted to these issues, confirming that the router was not performing as expected and assured users that GPT-5 would “appear more intelligent starting today.” He also promised to clarify which model was responding to each query.

Changes to Model Selection in ChatGPT

Initially, the update also removed the feature that allowed users to choose among different versions, such as GPT-4o, GPT-4.1, or the o4 mini model. Currently, customers of ChatGPT Pro, Team, and Enterprise can once again opt for GPT-4o by selecting the “show legacy models” option in the settings, whereas users on the free tier remain restricted to GPT-5.

Future Plans for Model Support

Altman stated that OpenAI would be monitoring usage patterns before making decisions about how long to maintain support for older models, indicating that GPT-4.1 might return if there is sufficient demand from Plus subscribers. He also mentioned the company’s commitment to “continue to stabilise” the models and remain receptive to user feedback.
