OpenAI’s Urgent Response to Gemini 3 Competition

OpenAI has entered a “code red” phase as Chief Executive Sam Altman has urged immediate action to enhance the functionality of their flagship product, ChatGPT. This decision reflects the increasing competitive pressures within the industry, primarily due to the introduction of Google’s Gemini 3 AI model, as reported by The Information.

Critical Times for ChatGPT

In an internal communication to employees, Altman highlighted that the company is at a pivotal moment for ChatGPT. The urgency arises from Google’s recent launch, which has reportedly eclipsed competitors on various crucial industry performance metrics. Altman warned staff that the market response to Gemini 3 could impose “temporary economic headwinds” for the firm located in San Francisco, acknowledging that the overall sentiment might be challenging for a while.

Shifts in Allegiance to Google Products

The competitive landscape intensified when notable industry leaders publicly chose the Google offering. For instance, Marc Benioff, the CEO of Salesforce, expressed that he would “not return” after experiencing Gemini 3. He commented on the remarkable advancements in its reasoning, speed, image processing, and video capabilities, describing the changes as “insane” and indicating that this release has significantly altered the competitive environment once more.

ChatGPT’s Dominance and Strategic Adjustments

Regardless of the pressures, ChatGPT continues to be a leading tool globally, boasting around 800 million weekly users. Nevertheless, OpenAI is implementing corrective strategies. The company is reallocating internal resources toward product improvements and has decided to postpone plans for introducing advertising within the chatbot, focusing instead on essential enhancements.

Financial Outlook and Long-term Strategies

Financially, OpenAI is currently operating at a loss yet expects its annual revenues to exceed £16 billion (about $20 billion) this year. Altman anticipates growth into the hundreds of billions by 2030. The firm’s most recent valuation reached an impressive £400 billion. However, the long-term strategy is notably capital-intensive, with a commitment to spend $1.4 trillion on data centre expenses over the coming eight years to develop and maintain its systems. This “code red” thus signifies both a product crisis and the need to secure a dominant market position to validate these substantial future financial commitments.

Altman remarked that the prevailing trends regarding AI usage indicate that the risk of OpenAI lacking sufficient computing power is more substantial and likely than the risk of having an excess.
