Perplexity AI Overhauls iPad App for Enhanced User Experience
Perplexity AI has introduced a significant update to its iPad application, targeting the increasing number of professionals and students who primarily use iPads. During an announcement on X, CEO Aravind Srinivas highlighted that the app transitioned from a larger mobile interface to a dedicated iPad experience, aiming to resemble the desktop version of the AI search engine more closely.
Previously, the Perplexity iPad app operated primarily as an enlarged version of its iOS counterpart, causing scaling issues on the larger display and leading to a subpar user experience. The redesign is intended to leverage iPadOS effectively and address recurring user complaints regarding apps that merely extend an iPhone-style interface to a bigger screen.
With this update, Perplexity now offers support for iPadOS multitasking features such as Split View and Slide Over. This functionality allows users to run the app alongside note-taking tools or document editors seamlessly. The interface has also been revamped to include a persistent sidebar for improved navigation, reflecting the layout of desktop browsers more accurately.
Enhanced Research Capabilities
The update incorporates research-focused features like improved citation displays and customised discovery feeds. These enhancements are designed to assist users in verifying sources more effectively while exploring related subjects on the iPad’s expansive high-resolution screen. Srinivas expressed that the goal was to blend the “polish and finesse” of the iOS app with the “experience of desktop usage.”
Encouraging Pro Subscription Uptake
The update is anticipated to boost Perplexity’s appeal among power users. By enhancing the iPad app as a robust research tool, the company appears to be motivating more users to consider subscribing to its Pro tier. This level grants access to advanced AI models, including GPT-5.2, Claude Sonnet 4.5, and Gemini 3 Pro, targeting students and professionals who work with larger screens like the iPad.
Other Developments at Perplexity
The enhancement of the iPad app coincides with a bustling period for the startup. Perplexity has recently unveiled its Comet browser on Android while continuing to expand its Shopping Hub, which provides AI-generated product recommendations. Srinivas has also warned users about “fake” versions of the upcoming Comet browser for iOS, advising them to await an official announcement before downloading any alternatives.
Availability of the Updated App
The revamped Perplexity app is now available on the Apple App Store. With its native multitasking capabilities, redesigned layout, and enhanced research functionalities, the company is promoting the iPad version as a more effective “dynamic copilot” experience for users on Apple’s tablet platform.
