Starlink’s Expansion Plans in India

Union Minister of Commerce and Industry Piyush Goyal recently engaged in discussions with high-ranking officials from Starlink, the satellite internet arm of SpaceX, regarding potential investments and the implementation of innovative connectivity solutions across India.

The delegation that visited included Chad Gibbs, Vice President of Starlink, and Ryan Goodnight, Senior Director, who are spearheading the company’s international growth initiatives. Their talks were focused on the advanced technology of Starlink that offers high-speed, low-latency satellite internet, its current global and regional collaborations, and prospective investment avenues in India.

Goyal shared on the social media platform X that he had a productive meeting with the Starlink leaders. He highlighted that the conversations included details about Starlink’s state-of-the-art technology, the partnerships it holds, and the company’s aspirations for investing in India.

This meeting occurs amid heightened interest from the government in enhancing digital infrastructure, particularly in isolated and underprivileged regions. Starlink’s network of low-earth orbit satellites has the potential to tackle connectivity issues in India’s rural areas.

Although the company is currently awaiting regulatory approval to commence full commercial activities in the nation, it has expressed substantial interest in the Indian market and has started preparations for future deployment.

This engagement represents a significant opportunity for India as it moves towards fostering more robust technological collaborations to further its Digital India goals.

Understanding Starlink

Starlink is an internet service powered by satellites that has been created by SpaceX, the aerospace venture established by Elon Musk. Its mission is to supply high-speed, low-latency broadband internet across the globe, especially targeting remote, rural, and underserved communities where conventional broadband infrastructure is either limited or lacking entirely.

  • Network of satellites: Starlink utilises a network of low-Earth orbit (LEO) satellites to provide internet directly to user terminals, known as “Starlink dishes”.
  • Global coverage: Starlink operates in numerous countries and is consistently broadening its coverage and capacity.
  • Performance: Users can anticipate download speeds from 50 Mbps up to over 250 Mbps, with latency ranging from 20-40 ms, contingent on the user’s location and current network demand.
  • Target users: The service caters to rural households, emergency services, maritime operations, and even in-flight Wi-Fi.

To access the service, users need a Starlink kit that includes a satellite dish, a mounting tripod, and a Wi-Fi router, which connects to the satellites to enable internet access.
