Aadhaar Mobile App Revolutionises Digital Identity Verification in India

The newly launched Aadhaar mobile app is set to transform digital identity verification in India. On Tuesday, the Centre introduced this innovative app that enables users to authenticate and share their Aadhaar information digitally, eliminating the need for physical cards or photocopies.

Launch of the Aadhaar App

The app was officially launched by the Union Minister for Electronics and IT, Ashwini Vaishnaw, in New Delhi. The minister referred to the app as a significant advancement towards enhancing digital privacy and convenience.

In a video message shared on X (formerly known as Twitter), he stated, “New Aadhaar App, Face ID authentication via mobile app. No physical card, no photocopies.”

Main Features of the Aadhaar App

A key highlight of the Aadhaar mobile app is its Face ID authentication feature, which enables users to verify their identity using just their smartphone. Additionally, the app integrates Aadhaar QR code scanning, streamlining the verification process to resemble a simple UPI payment transaction.

Vaishnaw commented, “Aadhaar verification becomes as simple as making a UPI payment.” He emphasised that users now have the ability to share only the essential data, thereby granting them greater control over their personal information.

Enhanced Privacy and Security

The introduction of the Aadhaar app removes the necessity of providing printed copies of Aadhaar cards, a practice frequently associated with vulnerability at hotels, retail outlets, airports, and other public checkpoints. The minister remarked, “No need to hand over Aadhaar photocopy at hotel receptions, shops or during travel.”

This app is currently undergoing beta testing and has been crafted with strong privacy safeguards. Users have full control over data sharing, ensuring that no data can be altered, forged, or misused.

Aadhaar as the Foundation of Digital Public Services

Referring to Aadhaar as the “aadhaar” or foundation of numerous digital public services, Vaishnaw showcased how this app is an integral component of India’s expanding Digital Public Infrastructure (DPI). He also encouraged technologists and businesses to assist in further incorporating artificial intelligence (AI) with DPI while prioritising privacy in all technological advancements.
