In a recent interview with CBS’s 60 Minutes, this British scientist and Nobel Prize winner highlighted that AI is evolving at an unprecedented rate. He noted that “It’s moving incredibly fast,” and this swift progression may represent “some kind of exponential curve of improvement.” Hassabis attributes this rapid development to heightened interest, resources, and global expertise entering the AI domain.

Transformational Impact of AI in Healthcare

Central to Hassabis’ predictions is AI’s disruptive potential in healthcare, especially in drug discovery. “On average, it takes around 10 years and billions of dollars to design a single drug,” he explained. “We might shorten this process from years to perhaps months or even weeks. This may sound astonishing now, but that’s the same reaction people had regarding protein structures in the past.”

DeepMind’s AlphaFold model exemplifies this capability, having mapped over 200 million protein structures in a single year—a feat Hassabis claims would have otherwise required “a billion years of PhD time.” Gaining insight into these structures is essential for identifying disease mechanisms and creating precise treatments. “If we know the function, then understanding diseases becomes possible… enabling us to design drugs and molecules that target specific parts of the protein’s surface,” he explained.

AI and the Future of Disease Eradication

When directly questioned whether AI could facilitate the elimination of all diseases, Hassabis expressed quiet confidence: “I think that’s within reach. Maybe within the next decade or so, I don’t see why not.”

His comments rapidly generated significant attention, including endorsements from unexpected sources. Aravind Srinivas, CEO of competitor AI firm Perplexity, took to X (formerly Twitter) to express his support. “Demis is a genius and he should be given all resources in the world to make this happen,” he remarked. Hassabis acknowledged the compliment with a brief, “Thanks Aravind!”

Despite his hopeful perspective, Hassabis also voiced concerns regarding the swift progression of AI, particularly the potential risks posed by misuse by malicious actors. He stressed the importance of ensuring that AI systems align with human values. “Can we ensure that we can maintain control over these systems? That they align with our values and contribute positively to society while remaining within safe boundaries?” he pondered.
