SmartThings Supports Matter 1.5 for Enhanced Camera Compatibility
SmartThings is embracing Matter 1.5, significantly extending the compatibility of its platform with Matter-compliant cameras from various brands. A software update for SmartThings is expected this month, enabling the management of a diverse array of smart home devices, including lights, cameras, appliances, and sensors, all through a single mobile application.
Samsung SmartThings with Matter Camera Support
Samsung highlighted that Matter 1.5, which was initially launched by the Connectivity Standards Alliance in November, introduces camera compatibility along with several advanced functionalities. These include operations for closures like blinds, awnings, garage doors, and enhanced energy management features.
Enhanced Camera Variety and Features
Additionally, Matter 1.5 includes support for numerous camera types, such as indoor and outdoor security cameras, video doorbells, and more. This upgrade offers users capabilities like live video streaming, two-way communication, motion detection, event history, and control over functions like pan, tilt, and zoom.
Collaboration with Leading IoT Device Manufacturers
Samsung has also forged partnerships with prominent IoT device manufacturers, including Aqara, Eve, and Ulticam, to create security cameras that adhere to the Matter standard. This collaboration promises improved compatibility across various smart home platforms, with expected product launches beginning in March 2026.
Benefits of Matter Camera Support
The addition of Matter support for cameras allows users an expanded selection of brands and models that can be easily integrated with the SmartThings app. This development simplifies the setup process and diminishes compatibility issues. Furthermore, users can efficiently manage tasks such as monitoring their homes remotely, watching over pets, and establishing personalised routines, like activating actions when motion is detected by a smart doorbell.
