Snapchat Updates: Apple Watch App and Lens Studio Expansion
Snapchat has recently introduced significant updates, including a dedicated Apple Watch app and the broader availability of its Lens Studio platform for iOS and the web. These developments underline Snap Inc.’s commitment to enhancing its device ecosystem and enabling users to engage more with augmented reality (AR).
In an announcement, Snapchat pointed out that with a global user base exceeding 900 million, the importance of staying connected across various devices has intensified. The company remarked on the increasing number of devices used in daily life, indicating its goal to extend the Snapchat experience beyond smartphones.
Apple Watch App Features
The new Apple Watch app, compatible with watchOS 9.0 or later, does not permit users to send Snaps or start new conversations. However, it facilitates quick replies to incoming messages through Scribble, Dictation, or emojis. Although similar functionalities were available via mirrored notifications on iPhones, the new app aims to provide a more direct and intuitive experience for smartwatch users.
Expansion of Lens Studio to Mobile and Web
In addition to the wearable update, Snapchat has expanded its popular AR development tool, Lens Studio, to include iPhone and web access. Previously only accessible on desktop, Lens Studio now boasts AI-driven features that empower iOS users to create and publish AR Lenses directly from their devices. The tools support creative additions such as Bitmojis, generative effects, and innovative visual styles.
While the desktop version continues to be the preferred platform for advanced developers, Snap indicated that the new iOS app and web version are aimed at lowering the barriers for creators and hobbyists keen on exploring AR.
Accessing Lens Studio
Lens Studio is now freely available for iPhone through the App Store and online at lensstudio.snapchat.com, unlocking new opportunities for mobile-focused AR content.
