Safe Superintelligence Gains $32 Billion Valuation with Alphabet and Nvidia Investments

Safe Superintelligence (SSI), an AI startup co-founded by Ilya Sutskever, the former chief scientist at OpenAI, has gained significant attention following investments from Alphabet and Nvidia. Official sources have revealed that the startup, which was established in June 2023, has rapidly soared to a remarkable valuation of $32 billion in its recent funding round.

The latest funding round, led by Greenoaks with an investment of $500 million, also included participation from notable investors such as Lightspeed Venture Partners and Andreessen Horowitz. This financing follows a previous raise of $1 billion in September 2023, which had valued SSI at $5 billion.

Leadership Behind SSI

Sutskever, who parted ways with OpenAI amid leadership disagreements last year, joined forces with Daniel Gross, previously Apple’s AI lead, and researcher Daniel Levy to establish SSI. The company operates from dual headquarters located in Palo Alto and Tel Aviv.

Innovative AI Products in Development

Although SSI has kept its product plans heavily under wraps, it is believed to be developing next-generation AI models that aim to surpass the capabilities of existing systems such as ChatGPT, Gemini, and Claude.

Strategic Partnership with Alphabet

In a significant strategic alignment, Alphabet’s cloud division has entered into an agreement to supply Tensor Processing Units (TPUs) to SSI, marking a departure from Google’s previous policy of keeping its proprietary AI chips for in-house operations.

SSI appears to be leaning towards TPUs instead of Nvidia’s GPUs, which have historically held over 80% of the AI chip market. This shift may indicate a broader transformation in AI infrastructure, as Google provides access to both TPUs and Nvidia GPUs through its cloud service to meet evolving demands in AI model development.

Intensifying Competition in AI Infrastructure

As competition in AI infrastructure intensifies, Google and Amazon have been pouring resources into another AI competitor, Anthropic, which is developing its models using Amazon’s Trainium and Inferentia chips. This makes evident the increasing rivalry among cloud computing leaders in the AI sector.

The investment in SSI signals a broader trend where major cloud service providers are taking strategic stakes in AI laboratories. Microsoft has chosen to support OpenAI, while Amazon and Google are backing Anthropic. Additionally, Nvidia has invested in both xAI and OpenAI.

Aiming for Advanced AI Capabilities

SSI’s strategy focuses on creating models that extend beyond mere language comprehension, aspiring to develop reasoning-driven AI systems that ultimately aim to exceed human cognitive abilities.
