A Tesla employee was dismissed only 24 hours after initiating a protest website directed at CEO Elon Musk and participating in a demonstration outside a Tesla facility, according to a report by Business Insider. Matthew LaBrot, who began working with the electric vehicle company in 2019 and advanced to a regional training position, indicated that he started this initiative because he could no longer align his values with Musk’s political stance, particularly his backing of Donald Trump.
Matthew LaBrot expressed that he had not intended to seek employment elsewhere, as he felt content with his job and believed he could have remained in that position indefinitely.
LaBrot’s protest website became operational on April 24, and the next day, he attended a “Tesla Takedown” event, displaying a sign that read “Pro Tesla, Not Elon!” He was let go the day following the event.
This dissent occurs amidst a series of challenges facing Tesla, including declining demand, increasing competition in the EV sector, and what many employees perceive as damage to the company’s reputation stemming from Musk’s political involvement. In the first quarter of 2024, Tesla recorded a 13% decrease in global deliveries. In California, traditionally a stronghold for the brand, vehicle registrations dropped by over 15%, according to state statistics.
Within Tesla, LaBrot noted that Musk’s increasingly partisan stance seemed to alienate a portion of the company’s previously diverse customer base.
By the time the elections approached, LaBrot noted a marked absence of expected customers. He explained that they did not need to excessively counter objections since those customers simply ceased to engage.
LaBrot identifies himself as a Democrat and had been an active proponent of Tesla’s mission focusing on clean energy. His concerns heightened after Musk’s acquisition of Twitter (now X) in 2022. He found escalating frustration from Musk’s political contributions and a perceived inappropriate gesture at Trump’s inauguration.
When the CEO makes such decisions, LaBrot believes, it drags the company in a specific direction.
Tesla has not addressed LaBrot’s dismissal or the assertions he made. Musk has previously dismissed claims that his political views influence Tesla’s brand image. He stated that ultimately, the quality of Tesla’s product is what truly matters.
However, LaBrot maintains a differing view. He believes that Tesla’s foundational values are at risk of being overshadowed by its CEO’s political persona. He supports Tesla’s mission but feels it is time for leadership change within the company.
