Highlights
Tesla shares fell by nearly 7% in premarket trading on Monday following the announcement of a new political party by CEO Elon Musk. This development has heightened concerns among investors regarding Musk’s focus shifting away from the automaker, which is facing challenges.
The Launch of the America Party
Over the weekend, Musk introduced the “America Party” in response to President Donald Trump’s newly signed tax cut and spending bill. This move occurs amidst a public rivalry between Musk and Trump that has been prominent on social media platforms.
Challenges for Tesla
The political distraction comes at a pivotal moment for Tesla. The automaker has reported a second consecutive decline in quarterly vehicle deliveries and is experiencing heightened competition in the electric vehicle sector.
Stock Performance
Since reaching an all-time high in December, Tesla’s stock has dropped by 35%, rendering it the lowest-performing stock among the “Magnificent Seven,” a group of top-performing US tech companies this year.
Earlier this year, Musk had reassured shareholders of his commitment to Tesla, announcing plans to reduce his political involvement and maintain his role as CEO for an additional five years. This promise had temporarily improved investor sentiment, but his recent political engagement has once again raised uncertainties.
Market Reactions
Adding to the market’s jitters, Azoria Partners, an investment firm, has delayed the launch of its Tesla-centric exchange-traded fund (ETF) after Musk’s political announcement.
Trump’s Reactions
Trump has since characterised Musk’s new party as “ridiculous” and has condemned Musk’s previous selection of Jared Isaacman to lead NASA, citing possible conflicts of interest.
Board Oversight Concerns
Tesla’s board has been under scrutiny for their seemingly hands-off approach regarding Musk’s expanding portfolio of responsibilities, which extends to leadership roles at five other firms. Legal professionals assert that the board is now facing amplified demands to limit Musk’s political activities.
