The Future of TikTok in the United States

The future of TikTok in the United States is still in doubt, as debates grow about who will manage the platform’s American arm. President Donald Trump has signalled that a group of prominent business leaders, including Rupert Murdoch, Lachlan Murdoch, Michael Dell, and Larry Ellison, might form a consortium to acquire TikTok’s US operations from its Chinese parent company, ByteDance.

Potential Investors in TikTok’s American Operations

During an interview broadcast on Fox News, Trump referred to the potential investors as individuals of significant repute, suggesting their involvement may bolster efforts to keep TikTok running in the nation while ensuring oversight from American authorities. Reports indicate that the Murdochs would likely engage through Fox Corporation instead of as individual private investors, potentially enhancing the media group’s ambitions in the digital landscape amid declining traditional television growth.

Oracle’s Role in TikTok’s Future

Oracle, co-founded by Ellison, is anticipated to be pivotal in the upcoming framework. The firm has been responsible for hosting TikTok’s US data since 2020 and is expected to manage the platform’s algorithm and privacy protocols moving forward. According to information from the White House, six of the seven board members of the proposed US entity would be American, a strategic move designed to alleviate national security worries.

Concerns Over ByteDance Ownership

Legislators have raised concerns that ByteDance’s ownership of TikTok could present risks, given that the company might be compelled by the Chinese government to divulge American user information or allow manipulation of its influential algorithm. To address these issues, Congress enacted legislation in 2024 mandating that TikTok divest approximately 80% of its US operations to American firms or face a country-wide ban. Although enforcement has been postponed multiple times, Trump has recently pushed the deadline to December 2025.

Trump’s Mixed Views on TikTok

Despite the prevailing pressure, Trump expressed a degree of ambivalence regarding the app, stating that he has “a little prejudice” concerning TikTok, as he believes it aided him in connecting with younger audiences. He has also engaged in discussions with Chinese President Xi Jinping, with US and Chinese representatives currently working towards a December 16 deadline to finalise aspects of a prospective agreement.

Currently, TikTok maintains its operations in the US, but its future hinges on ongoing discussions among Washington, Beijing, and the American stakeholders competing for control.
