Compact Smartphones Gaining Popularity Among Indian Users

A notable trend in the Indian smartphone market is the growing preference for compact smartphones. Many users feel that the current market does not adequately cater to their needs for a device that offers both portability and power. A recent survey conducted by Counterpoint Research for OnePlus indicates that 74% of participants favour compact phones, while 68% believe there are not enough choices in this category.

Survey Insights on User Preferences

The study surveyed 2,019 young professionals aged 18 to 35 from Tier 1 and Tier 2 cities, revealing that comfort, one-handed usability, and an ergonomic design are the main priorities as smartphones become increasingly larger. More than half of the respondents reported difficulties in handling large-screen devices, which include challenges such as reduced grip and accidental drops.

Market Opportunities for Compact Smartphones

Tarun Pathak, Director at Counterpoint Research, noted that consumers desire compact devices without sacrificing essential features like performance and battery longevity. Those nearing their upgrade cycles are gravitating towards compact smartphones, motivated by the need for a more comfortable and sustainable user experience. Despite this shift, the availability of powerful compact options is lacking, with around 90% of smartphones released in 2024 featuring screens larger than 6.5 inches. This creates a clear opportunity for brands to introduce compact smartphones that satisfy consumer demand.

Gaming Preferences for Compact Phones

Compact smartphones also received favourable reviews in the gaming sector, with 86% of participants indicating a preference for smaller devices due to factors such as comfort, grip, and reduced hand strain. Furthermore, 84% expressed a desire for customisable buttons for quicker access to applications and camera controls.

Design and Aesthetic Appeal

For 71% of users, a good in-hand feel was essential, while 69% highlighted the importance of aesthetic appeal in their purchasing decisions. The ideal compact screen size for 60% of respondents was identified as being between 6 to 6.5 inches, while only 11% showed a preference for devices smaller than 6 inches, indicating that modern compact smartphones do not necessarily mean they must be tiny.

Brands Consumers Trust for Compact Smartphones

When asked which brands they would consider for their next compact smartphone, Apple, Samsung, and OnePlus emerged as the most trusted. Additionally, a significant 89% of users rated AI-powered features such as voice assistants and battery optimisation as important, signalling to manufacturers the urgent need to produce smaller devices that deliver on performance.

Consumer Expectations on Performance

Arushi Chawla, Senior Research Analyst, remarked that consumers are increasingly looking for compact smartphones that offer a seamless one-handed experience, ideal for taking selfies, messaging, and gaming. Despite the emphasis on usability, concerns remain regarding potential compromises in battery life and processor performance when opting for compact devices. This underscores the importance of creating compact smartphones that efficiently balance portability with high-performance capabilities.
